In our fast -paced, noisy world, finding a moment of true peace can feel almost impossible, right?

But what if we could step out of our busy lives just for a night and walk under the quiet glow of a

full moon?

Today, we are doing exactly that.

We are diving into a masterpiece of modern Chinese prose that captures that exact feeling of

searching for quietude amidst inner unrest.

Thank you, Benjamin.

It is wonderful to be here.

It is an absolute honor to have you, Claire.

For our listeners, Claire is a renowned literary translator and a professor of Chinese literature

who has spent decades bridging the worlds of Eastern and Western prose.

Claire, you have a very special personal connection to this essay, don't you?

I do, Benjamin.

Many years ago, when I was studying in Beijing, I actually walked along the very same paths of

Tsinghua Garden, where the author, Zhu Zeking, walked back in the summer of 1927.

The essay we are exploring today is called Moonlight Over the Lotus Pond, or Heitong Yuese.

At the time, China was going through intense political turmoil.

Zhu Zeking, a sensitive intellectual and poet, felt deeply uneasy about the chaos around him.

One night, unable to find peace, he slipped out of his house to walk by the campus lotus pond.

The essay he wrote is not just a beautiful description of nature.

It is a profound reflection on the desire for temporary escape, the beauty of solitude, and the

gentle melancholy of returning to reality.

That historical context is so important, it really transforms how we hear the words.

Before you begin, is there anything special you think our listeners should keep an ear out for?

Yes, absolutely.

I recommend focusing on how Zhu Zeking uses synesthesia, where he blends different senses.

For example, listen to how he describes the scent of the lotuses as the faint singing from a distant

tower, or how he compares the play of light and shadow to a melody played on a violin.

It is incredibly poetic.

That sounds absolutely magical.

Well, without further ado, let us lose ourselves in the quiet beauty of Tsinghua Garden.

Claire, the floor is yours.

Moonlight Over the Lotus Pond by Zhu Zeking July 1927, Tsinghua Garden, Beijing These past few days,

my mind has been quite uneasy.

Sitting in the courtyard to cool off tonight, I suddenly thought of the lotus pond I walk past every day.

Under this full moon, it must surely have a different look.

The moon was gradually rising.

The children's laughter on the road outside the wall could no longer be heard.

墙外马路上孩子们的欢笑,已经听不见了;

In the room, my wife was patting our son, Runer, humming a lullaby, half asleep.

I quietly put on my overcoat and slipped out, closing the door behind me.

Along the lotus pond runs a winding, narrow cinder path.

It is a secluded path.

这是一条幽僻的路;

Few walk it even by day, and it is even lonelier at night.

All around the pond grow many trees, lush and dense.

On one side of the path are willows and some trees whose names I do not know.

On moonless nights, this path is gloomy and somewhat frightening.

Tonight, however, it was very pleasant, though the moonlight was still quite faint.

I was alone on the path, strolling with hands behind my back.

This patch of heaven and earth seemed to belong to me alone.

这一片天地好像是我的;

I felt as if I had transcended my usual self and entered another world.

I love bustle, but I also love serenity.

我爱热闹,也爱冷静;

I like being in a crowd, but I also like being alone.

Like tonight, alone under this boundless moonlight, I can think of anything or think of nothing at all.

I feel like a free man.

The things I had to do and the words I had to say during the day can now be completely ignored.

This is the beauty of solitude.

Let me enjoy this boundless fragrance of lotuses and moonlight.

Over the winding lotus pond, what nudes the eye is a field of lush, crowded leaves.

The leaves rise high above the water, like the skirts of graceful dancers.

Scattered among the layers of leaves are white flowers, some blooming elegantly, others shyly in bud.

层层的叶子中间,零星地点缀着些白花,有袅娜地开着的,有羞涩地打着朵儿的;

They are like glistening pearls, or stars in the blue sky, or beauties just emerging from their bath.

A gentle breeze passes, bringing wisps of faint fragrance, like the faint singing from a distant tower.

At this moment, a quiver passes through the leaves and flowers, like a flash of lightning, instantly

brushing to the other side of the pond.

The leaves, standing shoulder to shoulder, seem to ripple with a wave of deep green.

Beneath the leaves flows the silent water, completely hidden from view, making the grace of the

leaves even more striking.

The moonlight flows like water, quietly washing over the leaves and flowers.

A thin blue mist floats up from the pond.

The leaves and flowers seem as if they have been washed in milk, or like a dream draped in light gauze.

Although it is a full moon, a thin layer of cloud in the sky prevents a brilliant shine.

虽然是满月,天上却有一层淡淡的云,所以不能朗照;

Yet, to me, this is just perfect.

While deep sleep is indispensable, a light nap has its own charm.

The moonlight filters through the trees.

The dense shrubs high above cast irregular, dappled dark shadows, stark and ghostly, while the

高处丛生的灌木,落下参差的斑驳的黑影,峭楞楞如鬼一般;

sparse, beautiful silhouettes of the bending willows look as if painted on the lotus leaves.

The moonlight in the pond is not uniform, yet light and shadow weave a harmonious melody, like a

famous tune played on a violin.

All around the lotus pond, far and near, high and low, are trees, with willows being the most numerous.

These trees completely encircle the pond, leaving only a few gaps by the path, as if specifically

left for the moonlight.

The color of the trees is uniformly dark, looking at first glance like a shroud of mist.

树色一例是阴阴的,乍看像一团烟雾;

But the graceful form of the willows can still be discerned even within this mist.

Above the treetops, a range of distant mountains is faintly visible, just a rough outline.

Through the gaps in the trees, one or two streetlights peek through, listless, like the eyes of a

sleepy person.

At this moment, the liveliest sounds are the cicadas in the trees and the frogs in the water.

这时候最热闹的,要数树上的蝉声与水里的蛙声;

But the bustle belongs to them.

I have nothing.

Suddenly, I am reminded of lotus gathering.

Lotus gathering is an old custom of the South, which seems to have originated very early and

flourished during the Six Dynasties, as we can gather from the poetry.

The lotus gatherers were young women who went out in small boats, singing romantic songs.

Needless to say, there were many gatherers, as well as onlookers.

It was a bustling season, and a romantic one, too.

Emperor Yuan of Liang described it beautifully in his Ode to Lotus Gathering.

And so beautiful youths and maidens drift in boats, their hearts pledged to one another.

于是妖童媛女,荡舟心许;

The dragon -proud vessels turn slowly, passing the wine cups around.

鹢首徐回,兼传羽杯;

As the oars are about to move, they get caught in the water weeds.

As the boats are about to stir, the duckweed parts.

Look at their slender waists bound with white silk, pacing with hesitant steps.

尔其纤腰束素,迁延顾步;

In the transition from spring to summer, when leaves are tender and flowers first bloom, they smile

softly, fearing to wet their skirts, and pull in their robes, dreading to tilt the boat.

From this, we can see the playful joy of those days.

It was truly a delightful affair, but unfortunately we no longer have the fortune to enjoy it today.

And then I remembered these lines from the Song of Shizu.

Gathering lotuses in the southern pond in autumn, the lotus flowers rise above our heads.

采莲南塘秋,莲花过人头;

Bending down to play with the lotus seeds, the seeds are as clear as water.

If there were lotus gatherers tonight, the lotus flowers here indeed rise above our heads.

今晚若有采莲人,这儿的莲花也算得“过人头”了;

But without the sight of running water, it is incomplete.

And this, after all, makes me miss the south.

Lost in these thoughts, I suddenly raise my head and find myself already at my own door.

——这样想着,猛一抬头,不觉已是自己的门前;

Softly pushing the door open and stepping inside.

All is quiet.

My wife has been fast asleep for a long time.

Oh, Claire, that was absolutely breathtaking.

Thank you so much for that beautiful reading.

The way you captured the rhythm of Zuzaqing's prose, especially that transition from the quiet pond

to the ancient memories of the south, it was like taking a journey through time.

Thank you, Benjamin.

I am so glad it resonated with you.

When translating this, I wanted to make sure that the soft, dreamlike atmosphere of the Chinese

original was preserved.

There is such a delicate balance of sadness and beauty in his words.

Yes, and that contrast is so striking, particularly when he says, the bustle belongs to them, I have

nothing, referring to the cicadas and frogs.

It is a powerful reminder of how we can feel completely isolated, even when surrounded by the

vibrant energy of life.

Yet, there is a strange comfort in that isolation, isn't there? Absolutely.

It is the beauty of choosing to be alone, even if only for an hour, to find oneself before returning

to our daily roles.

Well, for our listeners out there, we have a little question to get you thinking.

In the essay, the author compares the leaves of the lotus pond to a specific type of clothing worn

by a dancer.

Do you remember what it was?
