stories, and ideas that have shaped human history.

I am your host, Franklin.

Today, we are diving into a masterpiece of classical Chinese literature that speaks directly to the

soul, especially during times of personal trial and tribulation.

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where everything seemed to be falling apart, yet you

somehow found a profound sense of inner peace?

Maybe you faced a major setback at work or had to move to a completely unfamiliar place, feeling isolated.

Well, today's author knew that feeling all too well.

We are traveling back to 11th century China, during the Song Dynasty, to meet a legendary scholar,

poet, and statesman named O -Lang Xiu.

O -Lang Xiu was one of the giants of Chinese literature, a leading figure of the classical prose movement.

But in the year 1045, due to political conflicts and his support for reforms, he was politically

demoted and exiled to Chuju, a remote and mountainous region in modern -day Anhui province.

Now, you might expect an exiled official to write bitter, melancholy poetry about his misfortune.

But O -Lang Xiu did the exact opposite.

He looked at the beautiful mountains around him, embraced the local people, and wrote one of the

To help us fully appreciate this masterpiece, I have prepared a meticulous, poetic English

As you listen, I want you to pay close attention to how O -Lang Xiu shifts his perspective, starting

local people, and finally revealing his own heart.

So, without further ado, let us take a deep breath, step away from our busy modern lives, and

journey to the beautiful hills of Chuju.

Here is O -Lang Xiu's masterpiece.

Chuju is surrounded by mountains on all sides.

Its southwestern peaks are especially beautiful, with lush forests and deep valleys.

The one that looks particularly verdant and elegantly deep is Mount Lanya.

Walking six or seven li along the mountain path, one gradually hears the bubbling sound of water,

the spring cascading from between two peaks is the Niang Spring.

Where the peak curves and the path turns, there is a pavilion perched wing -like over the spring,

this is the pavilion of the drunken old man.

Who built this pavilion?

It was the mountain monk, Jishin.

Who named it?

It was the governor, naming it after himself.

The governor came here to drink with his guests, he would get drunk after only a little wine, and

since he was the eldest, he called himself the drunken old man.

The drunken old man's heart is not in the wine, but in the mountains and waters.

The joy of the hills and valleys is captured in the heart, and manifested through wine.

Now, when the sun rises and the forest mists disperse, or when clouds gather and the mountain caves

grow dark, these shifting changes of light and shadow are the mornings and evenings of the mountains.

When wild flowers bloom, yielding a subtle fragrance, when beautiful trees flourish, casting dense

shade, when the wind is high, the frost is pure, and the water recedes to reveal the rocks, these

are the four seasons of the mountains.

Going out in the morning and returning in the evening, the scenery of the four seasons changes

constantly, and the joy thereof is boundless.

As for those carrying load singing on the path, travellers resting under the trees, those in front

calling out and those behind responding, the elderly bent with age and children led by hand, coming

The joy of the banquet lies not in strings or flutes, arrows hitting the target, chess players

winning, wine cups and gaming chips scattered in disarray, guests rising and sitting amid cheerful

clamour, this is the joy of the assembled guests.

With a withered face and white hair, falling into drunken slumber among them, this is the drunken governor.

Presently, the evening sun sinks behind the hills, and shadows scatter.

The governor returns, followed by his guests.

The woods cast deep shadows, and birds chirp all around, above and below, the travellers have

departed, and the birds are enjoying themselves.

However, the birds only know the joy of the mountains and forests, but not the joy of the people,

然而禽鸟知山林之乐,而不知人之乐;

the people know the joy of travelling with the governor, but they do not know that the governor

finds his joy in their joy.

He who can share their joy when drunk, and write about it when sober, that is the governor.

Who is the governor?

It is Ouyang's show of Lu Ling.

And there we have it!

A truly sublime piece of literature.

Even after nearly a thousand years, you can still feel the crisp autumn breeze, smell the wild

flowers, and hear the gentle bubbling of the Niang Spring, right?

What strikes me the most about this piece is Ouyang's show's incredible emotional resilience.

He was stripped of his high position in the capital and sent to a remote area.

Yet, instead of wallowing in self -pity, he looked outward.

He looked at the local villagers singing on the roads, the children, the elderly, and he felt a

deep, genuine happiness just seeing them happy.

He realised that true joy doesn't come from political power or high status, but from being in

harmony with nature and sharing simple pleasures with the community.

When he says, the drunken old man's heart is not in the wine, but in the mountains and waters, he is

reminding us that our ultimate peace lies in something much larger than our temporary earthly troubles.

I really hope this beautiful essay brought a sense of peace to your day, just as it did for me.

Before we wrap up, I have an interesting question for you to ponder.

In the essay, Ouyang Shio talks about different levels of joy, the joy of the birds, the joy of the

people, and his own joy as the governor.

How do you interpret the difference between these three levels of joy, and which one resonates with

you the most in your own life?
