Hello, everyone.

A very warm welcome back to TalkCastSpeaking, the podcast where we make English conversations

natural, practical, and fun.

I'm your host, Emily, and I have over 15 years of experience helping language learners find their voice.

Today, we are diving into a topic that almost every working professional has to deal with at some point.

Yes, we are talking about how to ask for time off, or qinjia in Chinese.

Hi, Emily.

Oh, man, just hearing that topic makes my heart beat a little faster.

I am so glad we are talking about this today.

Welcome to the show, Daniel.

Listeners, Daniel is an office worker at a global company, and he's here to represent all of you today.

Daniel, tell us, why does asking for time off make you so nervous?

Well, Emily, it's just so awkward.

In English, I never know if I sound too rude, too dramatic, or just completely unprofessional.

Once, I wanted to take a Friday off, and I sent my manager an email saying, I want to escape tomorrow.

I thought escape was a funny way to say get away from work, but my manager got really worried and

called me immediately.

Oh, no.

That is hilarious.

But I completely understand why your manager was alarmed.

Escape makes it sound like you are being held hostage at the office.

Escape

But don't worry.

Today, we are going to fix all of that.

We'll look at the most common, polite, and natural ways to ask for leave, so you never have to

escape again.

Let's start with some basic vocabulary.

Daniel, how do you usually say qingjia in English now, besides escape? Hmm.

I usually say ask a sick leave or ask a vacation.

我通常说 ask a sick leave 或者 ask a vacation。

Is that correct?

Ah, this is actually the most common mistake Chinese learners make.

Let's look at this closely.

First, we don't ask a leave.

The word leave here is uncountable, so we don't use a.

Second, ask needs the preposition for, so you could say ask for leave.

第二,ask 需要介词 for,所以你可以说 ask for leave。

But here's the thing.

Ask for leave sounds very formal, almost like you are in the military.

Ask for leave

In daily office life, we have much more natural expressions. Really?

What should we say instead?

The most common and natural phrase is take a day off or take some time off.

最常见且自然的短语是 take a day off 或者 take some time off。

Let's say that again.

Take a day off.

Notice how the words link together.

We don't say take a day off.

我们不说 take a day off。

We run them together.

Take a day off.

Can you try that, Daniel?

Take a day off.

Take a day off.

Oh, that does sound much smoother. Perfect.

You got it.

Now, what if you wake up in the morning and you are actually sick?

You can't go to work that very day.

In English, we have a specific phrasal verb for this.

We say call in sick.

For example, I need to call in sick today.

Ah, call in sick.

Do I actually have to call my boss on the phone?

Because honestly, texting is so much easier.

That's a fantastic question, Daniel.

Historically, yes, you had to make a phone call.

But nowadays, call in sick is used as a general term.

It just means notifying your workplace that you are sick and cannot work, whether you do it by

email, Slack, WeChat, or phone.

So you can say, I'm calling in sick today, even if you just sent an email.

That is a huge relief.

So if I want to tell my manager I'm sick today, can I write, I call in sick today because I have a cold.

You are very close.

But let's tweak the grammar slightly.

I call in sick sounds like a general habit.

‘I call in sick’

Since you are doing it right now, use the present continuous tense.

I am calling in sick today.

Or even better, make it polite.

I'm writing to call in sick today.

Now, building on that, let's talk about polite sentence structures.

This is where we use softeners to make our requests sound respectful. Softeners?

Like fabric softeners for clothes? Exactly.

Just like fabric softeners make your clothes soft, linguistic softeners make your language less

direct and more polite.

Instead of saying, I want to take tomorrow off, which sounds like a demand, we use phrases like,

would it be possible to?

Or, I was wondering if I could.

Oh, I was wondering if I could.

I've heard that before.

It sounds very polite.

Why is it in the past tense, was wondering, if I am asking about the future?

You have a great eye, Daniel.

Yes, we use the past continuous, was wondering, because it distances the request slightly.

It makes it sound less demanding and gives the other person room to say no if they have to.

It's a key polite strategy in English.

Let's practice pronouncing this phrase because it can be a bit of a tongue twister.

I was wondering if I could.

I was wondering if I could. Beautiful.

Now, let's put it together with our previous vocabulary.

How would you ask for Friday off using this structure?

Let me try.

I was wondering if I could take Friday off.

Spot on.

That is absolutely perfect.

It sounds professional and polite.

Now, let's look at another polite pattern.

Would it be possible to take some time off next week?

Notice the pronunciation of would it be.

注意 would it be 的发音。

We pronounce it like would it be.

我们发音得像 would it be 这样。

The D in would links with the I in it.

would 中的 D 和 it 中的 I 进行了连读。

Can you try?

Would it be possible to take some time off next week?

You're getting the hang of it.

That sounded incredibly natural.

Now, let's move on to cultural differences.

Daniel, when you ask for sick leave, how much detail do you normally give about your sickness?

Oh, I usually give a lot of detail.

I want my boss to know I'm not lying.

So I might write, I have terrible diarrhea and I've been visiting the bathroom every 10 minutes

since last night.

Oh, wow.

That is definitely a classic cross -cultural misunderstanding.

In Western corporate culture, that is what we call TMI.

Too much information.

Your manager really doesn't want to hear about your bathroom habits.

It's actually considered more professional to keep the details of your illness private.

Wait, really?

But if I just say I am sick, won't they think I'm just being lazy?

Generally, no.

Trust is a big part of the professional environment.

Instead of graphic medical details, we use a very handy idiom, under the weather.

It means you are feeling slightly unwell.

It's the perfect phrase because it is polite, professional, and doesn't reveal too much.

Under the weather?

That sounds like I'm standing under a rainy cloud.

How do I use it in a sentence?

You can say, I'm feeling a bit under the weather today.

It's simple, direct, and very polite.

Or, if you have a stomach bug or a cold but don't want to specify, you can just say, I'm not feeling

well today.

Or, I have a stomach bug.

That is more than enough.

No bathroom details required.

That is such a relief to know.

So, I can just say, I'm feeling a bit under the weather today, so I need to call in sick.

Is that right?

Absolutely perfect.

Now, what if you need to take time off not because you are physically sick, but because you have a

personal issue?

For example, you need to go to the bank, or move apartments, or maybe you just need a mental break.

What do we call that kind of leave?

Oh, is it private leave?

Ah, private leave is a direct translation from Chinese, but we don't use that in English.

Instead, we call it a personal day or personal leave.

And if you want to explain the reason politely without telling your boss all your private business,

you can use the phrase to handle a personal matter.

For instance, I need to take tomorrow off to handle a personal matter.

Oh, to handle a personal matter.

That sounds so professional and classy.

Sounds like I am managing important business.

It really does, doesn't it?

It shows you respect boundaries and are responsible.

Now, let's put everything we've learned today into a comprehensive practice.

We're going to do a quick role play.

Imagine I am your manager.

You need to ask for tomorrow off because you are moving to a new apartment.

Remember to use our softeners, the correct vocabulary, and our polite excuses.

Are you ready, Daniel?

Okay, let me take a deep breath.

Yes, I'm ready.

Go ahead, Daniel.

Knock on my virtual door.

Hi, Emily.

Do you have a minute?

I was wondering if I could take tomorrow off.

My lease is ending and I need to handle an urgent personal matter at home.

Oh, Daniel, that was fantastic.

You used I was wondering if I could and take tomorrow off and handle a personal matter.

That was incredibly natural.

Just one tiny grammar correction.

Since urgent starts with a vowel sound, we say an urgent personal matter instead of a urgent

由于 urgent 以元音音标开头,我们说 an urgent personal matter 而不是 a urgent

personal matter.

But otherwise, that was a flawless 10 out of 10.

Thank you, Emily.

I actually felt confident saying that.

It didn't feel awkward at all.

You did an amazing job, Daniel.

You're really getting the hang of it.

Now, let's do one more scenario.

Imagine you wake up in the morning and you have a terrible headache.

You need to write an email to me, your boss, to call in sick.

How would you write that email?

Okay, let's write this.

Dear Emily, I am writing to call in sick today because I am feeling a bit under the weather.

I will check my emails if I can, but otherwise, I will catch up on my work when I return tomorrow.

Thank you, Daniel.

Wow, Daniel, I am so impressed.

That email is perfect.

It's polite, professional, and clear.

You used calling in sick and under the weather perfectly.

And I love that you added catch up on my work.

That's a great phrasal verb meaning to do the work you missed.

It shows you are highly responsible.

Thanks to you, Emily.

Honestly, these small changes make a huge difference in how confident I feel.

I don't feel like I'm escaping anymore.

Yes, no more prison breaks from the office.

Well, everyone, our time today is flying by and we are reaching the end of today's episode.

Let's do a quick recap of the four key points we learned today so you can remember them easily.

Can I do the recap, Emily?

I want to test my memory.

I would love that.

Go for it, Daniel.

All right.

好的。

Today we learned, first, don't say, ask a leave.

Instead, use take a day off or take some time off.

相反,要用 take a day off 或 take some time off。

Second, when you are sick, use call in sick to notify your boss.

Third, use softeners like I was wondering if I could or would it be possible to to make your request

I was wondering if I could 或 would it be possible to 这样的缓和语来提出请求

super polite.

And fourth, don't give too many gross details about your illness.

Just say you are feeling under the weather or need to handle a personal matter.

That is a perfect summary.

Outstanding job, Daniel.
