and highly practical.

I'm your host, Emily, and I am absolutely thrilled you're tuning in today.

我是你们的主持人艾米丽,对于你们今天的收听我感到无比兴奋。

How is everyone doing?

大家最近都过得怎么样?

Now, let me ask you a quick question.

现在,让我问大家一个简单的小问题。

Have you ever been in an online meeting or a classroom and you had a burning question or maybe a

你是否曾身处线上会议或课堂中,心中有一个迫切的问题,或者...

great idea to share, but you just couldn't find the right moment to speak up?

也许有个好主意想分享,但就是找不到合适的时机开口说话?

You open your mouth, you hesitate, and then boom, the topic changes and you missed your chance.

你张开嘴,开始犹豫,然后“轰”的一声,话题变了,你错失了机会。

Well, if that sounds like you, don't worry.

好吧,如果这听起来像你的情况,别担心。

You are definitely not alone.

你绝对不是一个人。

And today's episode is designed specifically to help you find your voice.

今天的节目正是为了专门帮助你找到自己的声音而设计的。

To help us explore today's theme of asking questions and speaking up, we have a wonderful guest in

为了帮助我们探讨今天关于提问和勇敢发声的主题,我们请到了一位非常棒的嘉宾来到...

the studio.

...演播室。

Please welcome Kevin.

请欢迎凯文。

Kevin is a marketing specialist who works with international clients every day.

凯文是一名市场营销专家,每天都与国际客户打交道。

Kevin, welcome to the show.

凯文,欢迎来到本节目。

Hi, Emily.

嗨,艾米丽。

Thanks so much for having me.

非常感谢邀请我来。

I am so excited to be here.

我来到这里感到非常兴奋。

But to be completely honest, I'm also a little bit nervous.

但说实话,我也觉得有点紧张。

Speaking of speaking up, that is literally my biggest nightmare at work right now.

说到勇敢发言,那简直是我目前在工作中的最大噩梦。

Oh, really?

哦,真的吗?

Tell us more about that, Kevin.

告诉我们更多关于这方面的信息吧,凯文。

I'm sure so many of our listeners can relate to your experience.

我相信我们的很多听众都能对你的经历产生共鸣。

What usually happens when you want to say something in a meeting?

当你想在会议上说点什么时,通常会发生什么?

Well, in my weekly Zoom meetings with our global teams, my colleagues from the US and Europe are

嗯,在我们与全球团队的每周 Zoom 会议中,我来自美国和欧洲的同事们...

super active.

...超级活跃。

They talk so fast and they just bounce ideas off each other.

他们语速极快,而且只是互相碰撞想法。

Many times I have a question about the marketing budget or want to clarify a project timeline, but I

很多时候我对营销预算有疑问,或者想澄清项目时间表,但我...

just don't know how to interrupt them.

...就是不知道该如何打断他们。

I feel like if I just start talking, it will be very rude.

我觉得如果我直接开始说话,会非常粗鲁。

So I end up staying silent.

所以最后我只能选择保持沉默。

It's so frustrating.

这太令人沮丧了。

Oh, Kevin, I completely hear you.

哦,凯文,我完全理解你。

That is a classic struggle.

这是一个典型的难题。

It's what language researchers call a participation barrier.

这就是语言研究人员所说的参与障碍。

And you know what?

而且你知道吗?

It's not just about your English vocabulary.

这不仅仅关于你的英语词汇量。

It's about knowing the social formulas and timing.

这关乎了解社交准则和时机。

In Western business cultures, active participation is highly valued and politely interrupting is

在西方商业文化中,积极参与备受重视,而礼貌地打断...

actually seen as a sign of engagement, not rudeness.

...实际上被视为一种互动的标志,而不是粗鲁。

You just need the right tools to build that bridge.

你只需要合适的工具来搭建那座桥梁。

A bridge.

一座桥梁。

Yes, please.

是的,拜托了。

I desperately need that bridge.

我极度需要那座桥梁。

Where do we start, Teacher Emily?

我们从哪里开始呢,艾米丽老师?

Let's start with building a basic scaffold.

让我们从搭建一个基本的脚手架开始。

We'll start with how to politely enter a conversation.

我们将从如何礼貌地加入一段对话开始。

In English, we often refer to this as chiming in or jumping in.

在英语中,我们经常把这称作插话或加入。

Have you ever heard these terms before, Kevin?

凯文,你以前听过这些术语吗?

I've heard jump in before, like jumping into a pool.

我以前听过 jump in,就像跳进泳池一样。

But chime in?

但是 chime in 呢?

That sounds like bells.

听起来像铃声。

Ha ha.

哈哈。

Yes, exactly.

是的,确切地说。

Chime refers to the sound a bell makes.

Chime 指的是钟声发出的声音。

But as a phrasal verb, to chime in means to join a conversation, especially to express agreement or

但作为一个短语动词,chime in 意为加入一个对话,尤其是表达赞同或

offer an opinion.

提出一个观点。

It's a very common, natural -sounding phrase.

这是一个非常常见、听起来很自然的短语。

For example, you can say, if I could just chime in here, or can I jump in here?

例如,你可以说,如果我能在这里插话,或者我能在这里打断吗?

Oh, I see.

哦,我明白了。

If I could just chime in here.

如果我能在这里插话的话。

That sounds really smooth.

听起来真的很流畅。

But Emily, isn't jump in a bit too aggressive?

但是艾米丽,jump in 难道不会有点太具有攻击性了吗?

That is a great question.

这是一个很好的问题。

It actually depends on your tone of voice.

这实际上取决于你的语调。

If you say, can I jump in here?

如果你说,我能在这里插话吗?

With a friendly, rising intonation, it is extremely polite.

带着友好、上扬的语调,它是极其礼貌的。

It signals to everyone that you have a quick point to add, and it invites them to give you the floor.

它向大家暗示你有一个简短的观点要补充,并邀请他们把话语权交给你。

Let's practice the pronunciation of these two phrasal verbs, because the secret lies in the linking. Linking.

让我们练习这两个短语动词的发音,因为秘诀在于连读。连读。

Okay, I'm ready. Yes.

好的,我准备好了。是的。

Word connections are super important for natural English.

单词连接对地道的英语超级重要。

When we say chime in, we don't say chime in.

当我们说 chime in 时,我们不说 chime in。

We link the M sound in chime to the I in in.

我们将 chime 中的 M 音连接到 in 中的 I 上。

So it sounds like chime in.

所以它听起来像 chime in。

Let's try that together.

让我们一起试一试。

Kevin, can you say chime in?

凯文,你能说 chime in 吗?

Chime in.

Chime in.

Oh, wow.

哦,哇。

That is much easier to say than chime in. Exactly.

这比说 chime in 要容易得多。确实。

It flows beautifully.

它流淌得非常优美。

Now, let's try the full phrase.

现在,让我们尝试完整的短语。

If I could just chime in here.

如果我能稍微在这里插话的话。

If I could just chime in here? Perfect.

如果我能在这里插话?完美。

You mailed it.

你把它寄出去了。

Now let's do jump in.

现在我们来做 jump in。

We link the P sound in jump directly to the I in in, so it sounds like jump in.

我们把 jump 中的 P 音直接连到 in 中的 I 上,所以听起来像 jump in。

Try it.

尝试一下。

Jump in.

跳进去。

Can I jump in here? Fantastic.

我能在这里插话吗?太棒了。

You're getting the hang of it.

你逐渐掌握了其中的诀窍。

Notice how your voice naturally rises slightly at the end of here?

注意到你的声音在这里的结尾处是如何自然地微微上扬的吗?

That friendly intonation makes it incredibly polite.

那种友好的语调使它变得难以置信地礼貌。

Now let's step up our game.

现在让我们提升我们的水平。

What if you want to ask a specific question?

如果你想问一个具体的问题怎么办?

What is your go -to phrase right now, Kevin?

凯文,你现在常用的短语是什么?

Usually I wait for a pause and then I say, sorry, I have a question to ask you.

通常我会等一个停顿,然后我说,对不起,我有一个问题要问你。

But sometimes I feel like it sounds a bit clumsy or maybe too formal.

但有时我觉得它听起来有点笨拙,或者可能太正式了。

You're spot on, Kevin.

凯文,你完全说中了。

While I have a question to ask you is grammatically correct, it can sound a bit stiff.

虽然“我有问题想问你”在语法上是正确的,但听起来可能有点生硬。

And sometimes if your tone is flat, it can sound a little demanding, almost like a teacher calling

有时如果你的语调平平,听起来会有点苛求,简直就像老师在

on a student.

点名学生。

In a collaborative meeting, we want to keep things light and collaborative.

在一个合作性的会议中,我们希望氛围保持轻松且具有合作精神。

Let's use our three -step correction method here.

在这里让我们使用我们的三步纠正方法。

Kevin, imagine you want to ask about the project timeline.

凯文,想象一下你想询问项目的时间表。

Here is the common mistake, or let's call it the textbook way.

这里有个常见的错误,或者我们称之为教科书式的方式。

I want to ask you about the timeline.

我想问你关于时间表的事情。

The correct, more natural way to phrase this would be, I have a quick question about the timeline.

正确、更自然的表述方式应该是:I have a quick question about the timeline。

Or even better, I was wondering if you could clarify the timeline.

或者更好的是,我不知道你是否能澄清一下时间表。

Ah, I have a quick question about, and I was wondering if.

啊,“我有关于……的快速问题”以及“我想知道是否……”

Why are these better, Emily?

为什么这些更好呢,艾米丽?

Great question.

好问题。

First, using the word quick in quick question is a psychological trick.

首先,在 quick question 中使用 quick 这个词是一个心理学把戏。

It tells your colleagues, hey, I'm not going to hijack this meeting for 30 minutes.

这告诉你的同事,嘿,我不会劫持这个会议30分钟。

This will only take a second.

这只需要一秒钟。

It makes people much more willing to listen.

这让人更愿意倾听。

Second, I was wondering if is a classic indirect question.

第二,I was wondering if 是一个经典的间接疑问句。

In English grammar, using past continuous like was wondering makes your request softer, more polite,

在英语语法中,使用过去进行时(如 was wondering)会让你的请求更温和、更有礼貌,

and less direct.

且不那么直接。

Oh, that makes so much sense.

哦,这太有道理了。

We do that in Chinese, too.

我们在中文中也会这样。

We say, 我想玩一下, to soften the tone.

我们说“我想玩一下”,来柔化语气。

So, I was wondering, is the English equivalent? Precisely.

所以,I was wondering 就是英文的对应表达吗?正是如此。

It's all about keeping the social gears oiled.

这全是为了让社交齿轮保持润滑。

Now, let's look at another very common mistake Chinese learners make.

现在,让我们看看中国学习者犯的另一个非常常见的错误。

Sometimes in a meeting, they might say, I want to know why you did that.

有时在会议中,他们可能会说:“我想知道你为什么那样做。”

Kevin, how does that sound to you?

凯文,你觉得这听起来怎么样?

Now that you mention it, I want to know why you did that sounds a bit like an interrogation.

经你这么一说,I want to know why you did that 听起来有点像是一场审讯。

Like, why did you make this mistake? Exactly.

就像是,你为什么犯了这个错误?没错。

It puts people on the defensive.

这会让人们产生防御心理。

It's too confrontational.

这太具有对抗性了。

Instead of saying, I want to know why, you can use these fantastic, polite alternatives.

你可以用这些极好、很有礼貌的替代方案,而不是说“我想知道为什么”。

For example, could you walk us through the reasoning behind that decision?

例如,你能给我们解释一下那个决定背后的推理过程吗?

Or could you expand a bit more on that point?

或者你能就那一点再展开讲讲吗?

Ooh, walk us through the reasoning and expand on that point.

哦,给我们梳理一下推理过程,并在那个观点上展开。

Those sound so professional.

这些听起来太专业了。

Can you explain what expand on means?

你能解释一下 expand on 是什么意思吗?

Of course.

当然可以。

To expand on something means to give more details or more information about a topic.

To expand on something 的意思是针对某个话题提供更多的细节或信息。

It's a great phrasal verb.

这是一个很棒的短语动词。

So, if someone presents a marketing plan, and you want to know more about the target audience, you

所以,如果有人提出一个营销计划,而你想了解更多关于目标受众的信息,你

can say, could you expand on the target audience?

可以说:“could you expand on the target audience?”

It's a very polite way of saying, tell me more.

这是一种非常礼貌的表达“告诉我更多”的方式。

That is incredibly useful.

这极其有用。

Let me try to use it in a sentence.

让我尝试在一个句子中用一下它。

Um, could you expand on the budget details?

嗯,你能详细说说预算细节吗?

How's that?

这样子怎么样?

That's a great attempt.

这是一次很棒的尝试。

Absolutely perfect grammar and vocabulary.

语法和词汇绝对完美。

Your pronunciation of expand was very clear, too.

你对 expand 的发音也非常清晰。

You're a natural, Kevin.

你真是个天生的行家,凯文。

Thanks, Emily.

谢谢,艾米丽。

I'm feeling a bit more confident already.

我已经感觉自信一些了。

But I have another question.

但我还有另一个问题。

What if I didn't quite catch what someone said?

如果我没听懂别人说了什么怎么办?

You know, sometimes native speakers talk really fast or the audio glitches on Zoom?

你知道,有时母语者语速极快,或者 Zoom 上的音频出现故障?

How can I ask them to repeat without sounding like my English is bad?

我该如何请他们重复一遍,而又不会让人觉得我的英语很差呢?

Oh, this is such a common anxiety.

哦,这是一种非常普遍的焦虑。

People worry that asking for clarification makes them look incompetent.

人们担心要求澄清会让自己显得很无能。

But in reality, even native speakers constantly ask each other to clarify things.

但实际上,即使是母语者也经常要求对方澄清事情。

The key is to blame the connection or use a soft phrasing.

关键在于把责任推给网络连接或者使用委婉的措辞。

Here are a couple of go -to templates you can memorize.

这里有几个你可以背诵的常用模板。

First, you can say, sorry, I didn't quite catch that last part.

首先,你可以说,抱歉,我没太听清最后那部分。

Could you say that again?

你能把那句话再说一遍吗?

Or you can say, just to make sure we're on the same page, did you mean we should launch in October?

或者你可以说,为了确保我们的意见一致,你的意思是我们在十月份推出吗?

Just to make sure we're on the same page?

为了确保我们在同一页上?

I love that idiom.

我很喜欢那个习语。

On the same page means having the same understanding, right?

意见一致意味着有相同的理解,对吧?

Yes, exactly.

是的,完全正确。

It means being in agreement or having the same information.

这意味着达成一致或者拥有相同的信息。

It's one of the most widely used idioms in the corporate world.

这是企业界最广泛使用的习语之一。

When you say, just to make sure we're on the same page, it shows you are actively trying to

当你说“为了确保我们意见一致”时,这表明你正在积极地去

collaborate and avoid misunderstandings.

合作并避免误解。

It's an incredibly positive, professional way to ask for clarification. Wow.

这是一个非常积极、专业的请求澄清的方式。哇。

Just to make sure we're on the same page.

只要确保我们意见一致。

I am definitely going to use that in my meeting tomorrow. Awesome.

我绝对会在明天的会议上使用它。太棒了。

Now, let's talk about cultural context.

现在,我们来谈谈文化背景。

In many English -speaking environments, a meeting isn't just a place to receive information.

在许多英语国家的环境中,会议不仅仅是一个接收信息的地方。

It's a place to debate and discuss.

这是一个辩论和讨论的地方。

If you don't speak up, your team leader might think you have no ideas or that you are not interested

如果你不勇敢发言,你的团队领导可能会认为你没有想法或者你并不感兴趣

in the project.

对这个项目。

So even if you just say, I'd like to share a quick thought on this, or from my perspective, this

所以即使你只是说,我想对此分享一个简短的想法,或者从我的角度来看,这个

looks like a great opportunity, you are adding value.

看起来是一个绝佳的机会,你正在增加价值。

That makes sense.

这很有道理。

In my culture, we often wait for the boss to finish speaking entirely before we comment.

在我的文化中,我们经常等到老板完全讲完话后才发表评论。

But I see now that in global teams, they expect a more dynamic back and forth.

但我现在明白,在跨国团队中,他们期望有更多动态的互动。

Yes, it is a dynamic dance.

是的,这是一场动态的舞蹈。

And like any dance, you just need to practice the steps.

就像任何舞蹈一样,你只需要练习这些步骤。

Speaking of which, are you up for a quick role play, Kevin?

说到这个,凯文,你愿意进行一次快速的角色扮演吗?

Ooh, a role play.

噢,一次角色扮演。

Sure, let's do it.

当然,我们开始吧。

I'm ready to try out these new phrases. Great.

我已经准备好尝试这些新短语了。太棒了。

Let's imagine we are in a Zoom meeting.

让我们想象我们在一个 Zoom 会议中。

I am your project manager, and I am presenting a new marketing campaign.

我是你的项目经理,我正在介绍一个新的营销活动。

I'm talking fast, and you want to jump in to ask about the launch date.

我说话语速很快,而你想插话询问发布日期。

Whenever you're ready, try to interrupt me politely.

只要你准备好了,就尝试礼貌地打断我。

Okay, team.

好的,各位队员。

So for the Q4 campaign, we are planning to target younger audiences through social media, and we'll

所以对于第四季度的活动,我们计划通过社交媒体锁定更年轻的受众,并且我们将

be allocating most of the budget to video ads on Instagram and TikTok.

把大部分预算分配给 Instagram 和 TikTok 上的视频广告。

Sorry to jump in here, Emily, but I have a quick question about the launch date.

抱歉打断一下,艾米莉,我关于发布日期有个简单的问题。

When are we planning to start the campaign?

我们计划什么时候开始这项活动?

Oh, that's a great question, Kevin.

哦,这是一个好问题,凯文。

We are targeting November 1st.

我们的目标是11月1日。

Thanks for bringing that up.

谢谢你提出这一点。

Oh my goodness, Kevin.

我的天哪,凯文。

That was absolutely flawless.

那简直完美无瑕。

You used sorry to jump in here, and I have a quick question about with perfect timing and natural intonation.

你用了‘sorry to jump in here’和‘I have a quick question about’,时机把握得很好,语调也很自然。

How did that feel?

那感觉怎么样?

Honestly, it felt amazing.

老实说,感觉棒极了。

It didn't feel rude at all.

一点也不觉得粗鲁。

It felt like I was actually part of the conversation instead of just an observer.

感觉我真的参与到了对话中,而不仅仅是一个旁观者。

And that is exactly the goal.

而这正是我们的目标。

You've gone from feeling paralyzed in meetings to confidently chiming in and asking high -quality questions.

你已经从在会议中感到不知所措,转变为自信地插话并提出高质量的问题。

You have made incredible progress in just a few minutes.

在短短几分钟内,你取得了惊人的进步。

Thank you so much, Emily.

非常感谢你,艾米莉。

The scaffold you built for me really works.

你为我搭建的框架真的很管用。

I feel like I finally have the right tools in my pocket.

我觉得我终于掌握了合适的工具。

You are so welcome, Kevin.

不用客气,凯文。

And to all our listeners out there, you can do this too.

对于所有在收听的听众朋友们,你们也能做到这一点。

Let's quickly wrap up today's episode with a recap of our key takeaways.

让我们通过对核心要点的总结来快速结束今天的节目。

Today, we learned some incredibly powerful tools for speaking up.

今天,我们学习了一些强有力的发言工具。

Remember, first, to politely enter a conversation, use, if I could just chime in here, or can I jump

记住,首先,要礼貌地加入对话,可以使用‘if I could just chime in here’,或者‘can I jump’

in here?

在这里吗?

And remember the linking, chime in and jump in.

并且记住连读,即 chime in 和 jump in。

Second, when you want to ask a question, soften it by saying, I have a quick question about, or I

第二,当你想问问题时,通过说‘I have a quick question about’来将其委婉表达,或者

was wondering if you could clarify.

想知道你是否能澄清一下。

Third, avoid aggressive phrases like, I want to know why.

第三,避免使用诸如‘I want to know why’这样带有攻击性的短语。

And instead, use, could you expand on, or could you walk us through the reasoning behind?

相反,请使用‘could you expand on’,或者‘could you walk us through the reasoning behind’?

And finally, if you need to double -check something, use the professional idiom just to make sure

最后,如果你需要仔细核对某事,可以使用专业的习语‘just to make sure’

we're on the same page.

我们意见一致。

My challenge for you this week is to choose just one of these phrases and use it in your next

我本周给你们的挑战是,从这些短语中选择一个,并在接下来的

English meeting or class.

英语会议或课堂上使用它。

Don't worry about being perfect.

不要担心做到完美。

Just focus on making your voice heard. Yes.

只需专注于让你的声音被听到。是的。

Let's all try to take that small step together.

让我们共同努力迈出那小小的一步。

If I can do it, you can do it too.

如果我能做到,你也能做到。

Well said, Kevin.

说得好,凯文。

Thank you so much for joining us today.

非常感谢你今天加入我们。
