Hello, and welcome back to TalkCast Speaking.

I'm your host, Emma.

It's so wonderful to have you with us today.

If you're listening to this, you're taking a fantastic step toward mastering English in your daily life.

Today, we're diving into a topic that almost everyone has to face when they move or travel abroad,

opening a bank account and depositing money.

Yes, banking in English can feel very intimidating, but don't worry.

We are going to break it down step by step.

And to help us navigate this, I have a very special guest in the studio.

Please welcome Kevin.

Hi, Emma.

Hi, everyone.

Thank you so much for having me.

I am so excited.

But honestly, I'm also a little nervous.

I just arrived in New York two weeks ago to start my graduate studies.

And let me tell you, walking into an American bank last Monday was one of the scariest things I've

done so far.

I felt like my English just completely disappeared.

Oh, Kevin, please don't feel bad.

That is completely normal.

Even advanced English speakers can get nervous in a bank because the vocabulary is so specific.

But you are in the right place.

Today, we are going to build your confidence.

By the end of this episode, you'll be able to walk into any bank and open an account like a pro.

So tell me, Kevin, what happened when you went to the bank last Monday?

Well, first, I walked up to the counter and told the banker, I want to make a new bank card.

The banker looked a bit confused for a second and then said, Oh, you'd like to open an account?

I was so embarrassed.

Is make a bank card wrong?

说 make a bank card 是错误的吗?

Ah, what a perfect example to start with.

Don't worry, they understood you, but it's not how a native speaker would say it.

Let's look at this closely.

In Chinese, we often say, ban ka or zuo jang ka.

So it's natural to translate that directly as make a card.

But in English, the card is just a tool.

What you are actually doing is setting up the financial relationship with the bank.

So we use the verb open and the noun account.

Let's say that together.

Open an account.

Ah, I see.

Open an account.

That makes so much sense.

So instead of make a card, I should say, I would like to open an account. Exactly.

I would like to open an account。没错。

You got it.

I'd like to open an account is the perfect polite way to start.

I'd like to open an account

Now, once you say that, the banker is going to ask you a very important question.

They'll ask, would you like to open a checking account or a savings account?

Or maybe both?

When you heard that, Kevin, did you know the difference?

Oh, that was my second big puzzle.

I heard checking and thought, are they going to check my background?

Or checking, like checking a bag at the airport.

And savings, well, I guess that had to do with saving money, but I wasn't sure how they work together.

I love that.

Checking doesn't mean they are checking up on you.

Checking

Let's simplify this.

A checking account is your everyday account.

It's where your money goes in and out constantly.

You use it to pay bills, buy groceries, and withdraw cash.

It usually comes with a debit card.

Put simply, a checking account is for spending.

Okay, so a checking account is for my daily expenses and it uses a debit card.

Got it.

What about a savings account?

A savings account is exactly what it sounds like.

It's for keeping money that you don't plan to spend immediately.

The benefit of a savings account is that it earns interest, which is lixi in Chinese.

Although these days the interest rate might be very low, it's still a safer place to keep your

emergency fund.

We often call this a rainy day fund.

Ah, rainy day fund.

That's a beautiful idiom.

It means money saved for unexpected situations, right?

Like if my laptop breaks and I need to buy a new one. Precisely.

You're a natural, Kevin.

Now let's talk about the two main actions you do with these accounts.

Putting money in and taking money out.

Kevin, if you wanted to put $500 into your account, what would you say to the teller?

Hmm, I think I would say I want to put $500 in my account.

That's actually grammatically correct and people will understand you.

But if you want to sound more professional and dedau, we use the verb deposit.

Let's focus on this word.

Say it with me. Deposit. Deposit. Deposit. Deposit. Perfect.

Deposit。Deposit。Deposit。Deposit。完美。

And the opposite, taking money out, is withdraw.

Let's pay attention to the pronunciation of this one.

It ends with a soft sound followed by a draw. Withdraw.

Withdraw。

Let's try it, Kevin. Withdraw. Withdraw?

Withdraw。Withdraw?

Did I get it right?

That was excellent. Yes.

是的。

Let's make complete sentences now.

I'd like to make a deposit or I'd like to deposit $500.

And for taking money out, I'd like to make a withdrawal, which is the noun form, or I'd like to

I'd like to make a withdrawal(这是名词形式),或者 I'd like to

withdraw $500.

Okay, let me write this down.

I'd like to make a deposit and I'd like to make a withdrawal.

These sound so much more professional than put money in and take money out.

They really do.

Now, building on that, let's look at some important terms you'll hear when opening an account.

The banker will likely say, you need a minimum deposit to open the account.

Kevin, what do you think minimum deposit means?

Does it mean the smallest amount of money I must put in at the very beginning to start the account?

Spot on, yes.

For example, some banks require a minimum deposit of $25 or $50.

Another thing they might mention is the monthly maintenance fee or monthly service fee.

This is a charge the bank takes every month just for keeping your account open.

Wait, really?

They charge me just to keep my money there?

That's terrible.

Can we avoid this fee?

Yes, it surprises many international students.

But here is an insider tip.

You can often get this fee waived.

To waive a fee means to cancel or remove it.

To waive the fee, you usually need to maintain a minimum balance, which means keeping a certain

amount of money in the account at all times, or set up direct deposit.

Ah, direct deposit.

I've heard that term before.

What exactly is it?

Direct deposit is a system where your employer or school pays your salary or stipend directly into

your bank account electronically instead of giving you a paper check.

It's super convenient.

If you tell the bank, I will set up direct deposit from my university, they will often waive the

monthly fee.

Wow, that is an incredibly useful tip.

I will definitely ask about that when I go back.

So I can ask, can you waive the monthly fee if I set up direct deposit? Beautiful.

That is a perfect question.

You sound like a native customer already.

Now, before we do some real -life roleplay, let's talk about the documents you need.

The banker will say, I'll need two forms of ID.

This is another phrase that trips up a lot of newcomers.

Kevin, if they ask for two forms of ID, what are they looking for?

I guess one is my passport, but what is the second one?

I don't have an American driver's license yet.

Great question.

For international students, two forms of ID usually means your passport plus another official

document with your name on it.

This could be your student ID card, your I -20 form, or even a major credit card from your home country.

They also usually need a proof of address, like a utility bill or a lease agreement, to show that

you actually live where you say you live.

Ah, proof of address.

I have my apartment lease agreement.

Would that work?

Yes, a lease agreement is perfect.

Now, speaking of money and spending, there's one danger I must warn you about.

Overdraft fees.

Have you heard of this, Kevin?

No, I haven't.

What does overdraft mean?

To overdraft means to spend more money than you actually have in your checking account.

For example, if you only have $10 in your account, but you buy a lunch that costs $15 using your

debit card, the bank might let the transaction go through, but they will charge you an overdraft

fee, which is often around $35.

So that $15 lunch suddenly costs you $50.

Oh my goodness, $35 for a $5 overdraft?

That really would break the bank for me.

I need to be very careful.

Yes, and look at you using the idiom break the bank correctly.

That means to cost too much or exhaust your budget.

Very nice usage, Kevin.

Yes, overdraft fees are no joke.

So it's always wise to ask the bank to turn off overdraft protection.

So your card just gets declined instead of charging you a fee.

That's a life -saving tip, Emma.

Thank you.

My pleasure.

Now, Kevin, are you ready to put all of this into practice?

Let's do a quick role play.

I will play the friendly bank teller and you will be yourself, walking into the bank to open your

first account.

Don't worry about making mistakes.

Just breathe and use what we talked about. Ready? Ready.

Let's do this.

Welcome to Community First Bank.

How can I help you today?

Hi, good morning.

I'd like to open an account, please. Excellent.

We can certainly help you with that.

Are you looking to open a checking account or a savings account today?

I would like to open both, actually.

A checking account for my daily expenses and a savings account to earn some interest. Perfect.

I can set that up for you.

To get started, I'll need two forms of identification and a proof of address.

Do you have those with you? Yes.

I brought my passport and my student ID.

For proof of address, here's my apartment lease agreement. Great.

These look perfect.

Now, for our standard checking account, there is a monthly maintenance fee of $12.

However, we can waive that fee if you maintain a minimum balance of $1 ,500 or if you set up direct deposit.

Oh, that's great.

I am a student and I will get a monthly stipend for my university.

Can I use that to set up direct deposit to waive the fee? Absolutely.

Once the first direct deposit comes in, the fee will be waived automatically.

Now, to open the accounts, is there a minimum deposit you'd like to make today? Yes.

I would like to deposit $500 into my checking account and $200 into my savings account. Wonderful.

I will process those deposits for you.

Here is your new debit card.

Is there anything else I can help you with?

Actually, yes.

I want to avoid overdraft fees.

Can you disable overdraft protection on my card? Certainly.

I've set it up so that if there are insufficient funds, the transaction will simply be declined and

you won't be charged any fees.

And we're all set.

Here are your documents.

Thank you so much.

You've been very helpful.

And scene.

Wow, Kevin.

That was absolutely flawless.

You used open an account, direct deposit, deposit, savings account, and you even asked about turning

off overdraft protection.

How did that feel?

Wow, Emma.

That felt amazing.

Having those specific phrases ready -made made me feel so in control.

I wasn't searching for translations in my head because I already knew the right words to use.

I feel so much more confident now.

I am so proud of you, Kevin.

You did an incredible job.

And that is the secret of language learning.

Once you have the right structures and vocabulary scaffolds, the fear just melts away.

It really does.

I can't wait to go back to my real bank tomorrow and get my account sorted out.

That's the spirit.

Before we wrap up today's episode, let's do a quick recap of the core points we learned today so our

listeners can lock them in.

First, remember, don't say make a bank account.

首先,记住,不要说 make a bank account。

Say open an account.

Second, know the difference between a checking account for daily expenses and a savings account for saving.

Third, use the professional words deposit to put money in and withdraw to take money out.

Fourth, ask the bank to waive the monthly fee by setting up direct deposit.

And finally, be careful of overdraft fees.

That's a perfect summary, Emma.

For everyone listening at home, my advice is to try practicing this roleplay with a friend.

It really helps to say the words out loud.

That is a brilliant suggestion, Kevin.
