Today, we are traveling back over 1 ,200 years to the golden age of China's Tang dynasty.

We are going to explore a piece of literature that is so raw, so energetic, and so profoundly moving

that it remains a cornerstone of cultural memory to this day.

I am talking about Invitation to Wine or Jiang Jin -ju, written by the legendary poet immortal Li Bai.

Li Bai is widely regarded as one of the greatest poets in Chinese history.

He was a romantic, a wanderer, a deoist, and, yes, a legendary drinker.

But to understand this poem, we have to look at the man behind the myth.

Picture this, around the year 752 AD, Li Bai was in his early 50s.

Years earlier, he had been expelled from the imperial court in Chang 'an, his political dreams shattered.

He was wandering the country, feeling frustrated, yet stubbornly proud.

It was during a reunion with his close friends, Master Center and the deoist scholar Dancio, that Li

Bai poured all his existential dread, his defiant optimism, and his love for life into this

magnificent poem.

What makes this poem so extraordinary is its scale.

It begins with the roaring momentum of nature and the crushing reality of mortality, but quickly

pivots into a wild celebration of self -worth and friendship.

As we listen, I want you to pay close attention to the sheer contrast between the vastness of the

universe and the fleeting nature of human life, and how Li Bai uses the image of wine not just for

indulgence, but as a medium to drown what he calls his eternal sorrow.

So, without further ado, let us immerse ourselves in the translation of Li Bai's masterpiece,

Invitation to Wine.

Do you not see the yellow river's waters come from the sky, rushing to the ocean, never to return?

Do you not see, in the mirror of the high hall, the sorrow of white hair, black as silk at dawn,

turn to snow by dusk?

When life goes well, be fully glad, never let your golden cup stand empty before the moon.

Heaven made me with talents that must be used, a thousand pieces of gold spent will all return.

Cook the sheep, slaughter the ox, let us make merry, we must drink three hundred cups in a single sitting.

Master Center, Dancio, bring in the wine, let the cups not stop.

Let me sing a song for you, please, bend your ears and listen.

Bells and drums, fine food and jade, are not to be prized, I only wish to be forever drunk and never wake.

Sages and scholars of old are all forgotten now, only the drinkers have left their names behind.

The prince of Chen in days of old feasted at Pingal, with ten thousand measures of wine, indulging

Why should our host say he is short of money?

Go straight and buy the wine to pour for you.

My five -flower horse, my thousand gold fur coat, call the boy to take them out and exchange them for

fine wine, to drown with you this eternal sorrow.

Every time I read those final lines, I get goosebumps.

The sheer bravado of offering to trade his most prized possessions, his five -flower horse and his

thousand gold fur coat, just to keep the wine flowing and to drown in eternal sorrow.

It is not just about drinking, is it?

It is a passionate, defiant rebellion against the limits of time and the disappointments of society.

By bringing him up, Li Bai is connecting his own pain to a long lineage of brilliant minds who were

misunderstood by their times.

Yet, instead of falling into despair, Li Bai chooses joy.

He chooses friendship.

I would love to know, which part of the poem resonated with you the most?

Was it the grand opening with the yellow river coming from the sky, or the vulnerable moment of

realizing one's hair has turned to snow, or perhaps that fierce proclamation of self -worth?
