Hello and welcome to TalkCast, the show where we dive deep into the latest trends in technology,

society, and science, and make them easy to understand.

I am your host, Laura.

Today, we are turning our eyes, or should I say our cameras, to the deep blue sea.

Recently, there has been a massive news headline in the tech world.

Chinese -made underwater robots are experiencing an absolute boom in global orders.

Exports have jumped by a staggering 60%, with some companies making over 90 % of their revenue from

overseas markets.

These little metallic explorers are being shipped all over the world.

But what exactly do these underwater robots do?

How do they survive the crushing pressure of the deep ocean?

And how do they communicate when there is no Wi -Fi or GPS underwater?

Joining us today to unpack all of this is Dr.

Charles, a senior marine robotics engineer and ocean technology specialist.

Charles, it is an absolute pleasure to have you on TalkCast.

Thank you, Laura.

It is wonderful to be here.

I am always excited to talk about marine robots.

It is a field that is rapidly moving from the pages of science fiction right into our daily lives

and global industries.

It really is.

Let us start with the basics for our listeners who might be new to this.

When we say underwater robots, what are we actually talking about?

Are they like the drones we see flying in the parks, but just underwater?

That is actually a very good analogy, Laura.

In the industry, we generally divide them into two main categories.

The first is ROV, which stands for Remotely Operated Vehicle.

Think of an ROV as a drone on a leash.

It is connected to a ship on the surface by a long cable.

This cable, or tether, sends power down to the robot and sends high -definition video back up to the

human pilot.

The second type is AUV, or Autonomous Underwater Vehicle.

These are more like independent underwater explorers.

They do not have a cable.

Instead, they carry their own batteries and follow pre -programmed paths to collect data all by themselves.

So you can think of it as a leashed puppy versus an independent explorer.

A leashed puppy versus an independent explorer.

I love that picture.

Now, operating a robot in the air is one thing, but water is a completely different beast.

The first major challenge that comes to mind is water pressure.

We all know that if you dive too deep, the pressure can be dangerous.

How do these robots survive without getting crushed like an empty soda can?

You hit the nail on the head, Laura.

Water pressure, or what we call hydrostatic pressure, is incredibly powerful.

For every 10 meters you go down, the pressure increases by about one atmosphere, which is the

pressure we feel at sea level.

If you go down a few hundred meters, the pressure is like having an elephant standing on your thumb.

To survive this, engineers use two main secrets.

First is materials.

We use high -strength materials like titanium, carbon fiber, or special aircraft -grade aluminum.

Second is a technique called oil filling.

Instead of leaving empty air pockets inside the robot, we fill the delicate electronic compartments

with a special non -conductive oil.

Because liquids cannot be easily compressed, the oil inside pushes back against the water outside

with equal force, preventing the robot from collapsing.

It is a brilliant way to balance the pressure.

Wow, oil filling.

That is fascinating.

So the liquid inside acts as a shield against the liquid outside.

Now, what about waterproofing?

Water and electronics famously do not get along.

How do you keep the water out of the motor and cameras?

It is a constant battle, Laura.

We use multiple layers of defense.

The most common are dynamic seals and O -rings, which are specially designed rubber rings that block

water at the joints where parts move.

For the motors, we often use magnetic coupling.

This means the motor inside spins a magnet, which then spins another magnet outside the waterproof

shell to turn the propeller.

There is no physical shaft passing through the wall, which means zero chance of water leaking

through that connection.

It is incredibly reliable.

That is so clever.

Using magnets to spin the propeller through a solid wall.

Now, let us talk about another massive challenge, communication and navigation.

When I go hiking, I use GPS on my phone.

But GPS signals are radio waves, and radio waves do not travel well through water at all, right?

How do these robots find their way around in the pitch black ocean?

You are absolutely right.

Radio waves, including GPS and Wi -Fi, are absorbed by water within just a few centimeters.

So once a robot submerges, it is completely blind to GPS.

Instead of light or radio waves, we use sound.

Sound travels incredibly well and very fast in water, about five times faster than it does in the air.

We use acoustic communication and sonar.

For navigation, we use a device called a Doppler Velocity Log, or DVL, combined with an Inertial

Navigation System, or INS.

The DVL sends sound waves to the seafloor and listens to the echo to calculate how fast the robot is moving.

The INS uses gyroscopes to keep track of every turn and tilt.

By combining these two, the robot can calculate its position very accurately, even without GPS.

So instead of seeing, they are basically listening to their environment, much like bats do with echolocation.

That is beautiful.

Now, Charles, let us talk about this global boom.

Why are we seeing such a massive spike in orders for these underwater robots right now?

Who is buying them, and what are they using them for?

The market has exploded because these robots have become much more affordable, reliable, and easy to use.

Historically, underwater robots were only used by military forces or giant oil companies because

they cost millions of dollars.

But now, thanks to advanced manufacturing, we have compact commercial robots that cost only a

fraction of that.

One of the biggest buyers is the aquaculture industry, which is fish farming.

Farmers use small ROVs to inspect their underwater nets for holes, check on the health of the fish,

and clean underwater structures.

It saves them from having to hire human divers, which is expensive and highly dangerous.

Yes, safety must be a huge factor.

Sending a human diver into cold, dark, and pressured waters is always risky. Absolutely.

Safety is the number one driver.

Beyond fish farming, these robots are widely used for infrastructure inspection.

Think of inspecting the underwater walls of dams, checking bridge pillars, or surveying scientific pipelines.

They are also used for search and rescue operations in lakes and oceans.

Recently, we have even seen a rise in consumer -grade underwater drones.

Divers and marine enthusiasts use them to take stunning underwater videos and photos without even

getting wet themselves.

That sounds incredibly fun.

Imagine exploring a shipwreck from the comfort of a boat deck while wearing virtual reality goggles

connected to the robot.

Is that actually possible today?

Yes, it is.

In fact, some of the latest models support VR headset integration.

You put on the goggles, and as you turn your head, the robot's camera turns in the same direction.

It gives you a fully immersive first -person view of the underwater world.

It is truly mind -blowing technology.

I might have to put one of those on my Christmas wish list.

Now, Charles, looking ahead, where do you see this technology going in the next 5 to 10 years?

What is the next big breakthrough for underwater robots?

The future is all about artificial intelligence and autonomy.

Right now, most commercial ROVs still need a human pilot.

But we're working on making them fully autonomous.

Imagine a robot that lives permanently in an underwater docking station at a fish farm or an

offshore wind turbine.

It wakes up every morning, conducts a patrol, detects any anomalies like a crack or a leak using AI

vision, repairs it if possible, and then goes back to its dock to recharge.

All without any human intervention.

We are also exploring robot swarms, where multiple small robots work together to map a large area of

the ocean floor, communicating with each other through acoustic signals.

An underwater robot swarm, working together like a school of fish.

That is both poetic and incredibly practical.

It is clear that we are just scratching the surface of what is possible in ocean exploration.

Indeed, Laura.

We often say we know more about the surface of the moon than we do about our own ocean floors.

These robots are the keys to unlocking the mysteries of 70 % of our planet.

That is a wonderful note to wrap up on. Dr.
