Hello, everyone!

大家好!

Welcome back to TalkCast Speaking, your favorite spot for practical, everyday English.

欢迎回到 TalkCast Speaking,这里是你获取实用日常英语的最爱之地。

I'm your host, Rachel.

我是你的主持人,瑞秋。

We have a super exciting and, honestly, very delicious topic today.

说实话,我们今天有一个超级令人兴奋且非常美味的话题。

But before we dive in, let me introduce our wonderful co -host for today's episode, Brian.

但在我们开始之前,让我介绍一下我们今天这一期的优秀联合主持人,布莱恩。

Welcome, Brian!

欢迎,布莱恩!

Hi, Rachel.

嗨,瑞秋。

Thanks for having me.

感谢邀请我。

I am so excited to be here.

来到这里我非常兴奋。

Honestly, as someone who loves traveling and eating out, I always look forward to our conversations

说实话,作为一名喜欢旅行和外出就餐的人,我总是很期待我们的对话

because I learn things that I can actually use the next time I step into a restaurant.

因为我学到了下次踏进餐厅时实际上能用到的东西。

And today's topic is something I have struggled with so many times.

而今天的话题是我多次纠结过的事情。

Oh, really?

哦,真的吗?

Now you've got me curious.

现在你让我很好奇了。

What is this struggle you're talking about, Brian?

布莱恩,你所说的这个困扰是什么呢?

Give us a little hint.

给我们一点提示吧。

Well, it's about drinks.

嗯,是关于饮料的。

Specifically, when you finish your soda or a coffee at a diner or a cafe and you want another one,

具体来说,当你在路边小餐馆或咖啡馆喝完汽水或咖啡并想要再来一杯时,

but you have no idea how to ask for it.

但你完全没有头绪该怎么开口要。

Or worse, you don't know if you have to pay for the second cup.

或者更糟的是,你不知道第二杯是否需要付费。

I once sat in a diner in New York, desperately thirsty, staring at my empty cup of iced tea, but I

我曾经坐在纽约的一家餐馆里,极度口渴,盯着我空空的冰茶杯,但我

was too embarrassed to ask because I didn't want to get charged twice.

却太尴尬而不好意思开口,因为我不想被收两次费用。

Oh, Brian, that is such a classic experience.

哦,布莱恩,那真是太经典的经历了。

You are definitely not alone.

你绝对不是一个人。

Many English learners feel exactly the same way.

许多英语学习者感到完全一样。

In many countries, you pay for every single drink you order.

在许多国家,你点的每一杯饮料都要付钱。

But in places like the U .S., free refills are a huge part of the dining culture.

但在美国这样的地方,免费续杯是餐饮文化中很重要的一部分。

So today, we are going to master the art of asking for a refill, learning the right vocabulary, and

所以今天,我们将掌握请求续杯的艺术,学习正确的词汇,并且

even talking about how VIP or loyalty members can get special drink perks.

甚至还会讨论贵宾或忠诚会员如何获得特殊的饮料福利。

Sound good?

听起来不错吧?

That sounds absolutely perfect, Rachel.

那听起来绝对完美,瑞秋。

My thirsty past self is cheering right now.

我那个曾经口渴的过去自我现在正在欢呼。

Let's start with the basics.

让我们从基础开始吧。

If I am in a restaurant and I want another drink, what is the magical word I need to use?

如果我在一家餐厅里想再要一杯饮料,我需要使用的神奇单词是什么?

The magical word is refill.

那个神奇的词就是续杯。

Let's say that together.

让我们一起来念。

Re -fill.

续杯。

It can be used as a noun or a verb.

它可以作为名词或动词使用。

For example, as a noun, you can say, can I get a refill, please?

例如,作为名词,你可以说,请问我可以续杯吗?

This is probably the most common and polite way to ask.

这可能是最常见、最礼貌的询问方式。

Let's analyze the pronunciation here.

让我们分析一下这里的发音。

Notice how get and a link together?

注意 get 和 a 是如何连在一起的?

It sounds like get -a.

它听起来像 get-a。

Can I get a refill, please?

请问我可以续杯吗?

Ah, get a refill.

啊,来个续杯。

That sounds so natural.

那听起来真自然。

Let me try.

让我试试。

Can I get a refill, please?

请问我可以续杯吗?

Did I get the linking right?

我的连读读对了吗?

Spot on, Brian.

完全正确,布莱恩。

Your linking was beautiful.

你的连读非常完美。

Now, let's talk about a very common mistake.

现在,让我们聊聊一个非常常见的错误。

Many Chinese speakers translate shu bei directly in their heads and say something like, can I renew

许多说中文的人会在脑海里直接翻译“续杯”,然后说出类似 can I renew

my drink?

我的饮料吗?

Or, I want to repeat my Coke.

或者是,“我想重点一杯可乐。”

Oh, Brian, have you ever heard or used renew for drinks?

哦,Brian,你听说过或者用过 renew(续订)来表示饮料吗?

Guilty as charged.

认罪,确实被你说中了。

I think I actually said, can I renew this once?

我想我实际上说过,这个能帮我续一次吗?

Because in Chinese, we use the word shu, which is the same word we use for renewing a gym membership

因为在中文里,我们用“续”这个字,和我们续健身房会员用的是同一个字

or a subscription.

或者订阅。

The waiter looked so confused. Exactly.

服务员看起来非常困惑。确实如此。

Renew is for memberships, passports, or driver's licenses.

Renew 是用于会员资格、护照或驾驶执照的。

If you ask a waiter to renew your Coke, they might think you want to sign a contract with the beverage.

如果你让服务员 renew 你的可乐,他们可能会以为你想和这杯饮料签合同。

So remember, for drinks, we always use refill.

所以记住,对于饮料,我们总是用 refill(续杯)。

Another common way to say it, especially in a more casual setting, is top off or top up.

另一种常见的说法,尤其是在更随意的场合,是 top off 或 top up。

For example, could you top me off, please?

例如,请问能帮我倒满吗?

Oh, top me off.

哦,帮我倒满。

I like that.

我喜欢那个说法。

Does that mean the same thing as a refill? Almost.

那和 refill 是一个意思吗?几乎是的。

Top off usually means to pour a bit more liquid into a cup or glass that isn't completely empty yet.

Top off 通常是指往还没完全空掉的杯子里再倒一点液体。

Imagine a waiter walking around with a coffee pot, seeing your cup is half empty, and offering to

想象一下服务员拿着咖啡壶走来走去,看到你的杯子半空着,并主动

pour more.

倒更多。

That's a top off.

那就是续满(top off)。

You can say, yes, please, a quick top off would be great.

你可以说,好的,顺便快速帮我续一点就太好了。

That makes so much sense.

那太有道理了。

It's like adding a little extra to keep it full.

就像多加额外的一点点来保持倒满状态。

Now, Rachel, what if I am not sure if the refill is actually free?

那么,Rachel,如果我不确定续杯是否真的免费怎么办?

I don't want to get a surprise on my bill.

我可不想在账单上看到“意外”。

How do I ask if refills are free without sounding cheap?

我该怎么问免费续杯的事,才不会显得自己很小气呢?

That is a very smart question.

这是一个非常聪明的问题。

You can ask very directly but politely.

你可以问得很直接,但也要很礼貌。

Do you offer free refills on soda?

你们提供汽水免费续杯吗?

Or are refills complimentary?

或者续杯是免费赠送的吗?

Complimentary is a slightly fancier, polite word for free.

Complimentary 是一个稍微更高级、更礼貌的表示免费的词。

It sounds very professional.

听起来非常专业。

Let's try that word.

让我们尝试发一下这个词。

Com -ple -ment -ter -ry.

康-普-利-门-特-瑞。

Com -ple -ment -ter -ry.

康-普-利-门-特-瑞。

Are refills complimentary?

续杯是免费的吗?

Wow, that sounds very elegant.

哇,听起来非常优雅。

I will definitely use that in a nicer restaurant.

去好一点的餐厅我一定会用这个词。

It really does.

确实真的是这样。

Another fun term you might see on a menu is bottomless.

你在菜单上可能会看到的另一个有趣的词是无限续杯。

For example, bottomless soda or bottomless coffee.

例如,无限续杯的汽水或无限续杯的咖啡。

Bottomless literally means the cup has no bottom, meaning you can drink as much as you want and they

Bottomless 字面意思是杯子没有底,意思是你可以想喝多少就喝多少,而且他们

will keep refilling it for free.

会一直免费续杯。

You often see this during weekend brunch with bottomless mimosas. Bottomless.

你经常在周末早午餐看到无限续杯的含羞草鸡尾酒。无限续杯。

That is such a vivid picture.

那画面感太生动了。

A cup with no bottom.

一个没有底的杯子。

I love it.

我喜欢这个说法。

But wait, Rachel.

不过等等,瑞秋。

What about places where refills are not free for everyone, but they are free if you are a VIP or a

如果有些地方并非所有人都能免费续杯,但如果你是贵宾或者

loyalty member?

忠诚会员就免费呢?

I've seen some cafes do this.

我见过有些咖啡馆这么做。

Yes, this is a huge trend now, especially with global chains like Starbucks.

是的,现在这是一大趋势,尤其是像星巴克这样的全球连锁店。

This brings us to our VIP and loyalty section of the day.

这就引出了我们今天的贵宾与会员板块。

In many coffee shops, standard customers have to pay for a second cup.

在很多咖啡馆里,普通顾客喝第二杯是要付钱的。

However, if you are a registered rewards member, which is basically their version of a VIP, you get

然而,如果你是注册奖励会员(基本上就是他们版本的VIP),你就可以

free refills of brewed coffee or tea during your visit.

在店期间免费续杯冲泡咖啡或茶。

Wait, really?

等等,真的吗?

I am a Starbucks rewards member, but I never knew that.

我是星巴克的奖励会员,但我居然从来不知道。

How do I ask for that free refill using my VIP status?

我该如何利用我的 VIP 身份要求免费续杯呢?

It's super simple.

这非常简单。

When you go up to the counter with your empty cup, you can say, Hi, I'm a rewards member.

当你拿着空杯走到柜台前时,你可以说:“嗨,我是会员。”

Am I eligible for a free refill on my drip coffee?

我喝的滴滤咖啡有资格免费续杯吗?

The key phrase here is eligible for.

这里的关键词组是“eligible for”(有……资格)。

It means having the right to do or obtain something because you meet certain conditions.

它的意思是由于满足特定条件而有权做某事或获得某物。

Ah, eligible for.

啊,“符合资格”。

That is a great phrase.

那真是个棒极了的表达。

Am I eligible for a free refill?

我有资格免费续杯吗?

Let me practice that.

让我练习一下。

Since I'm a VIP member, am I eligible for a free refill? Perfect.

既然我是贵宾会员,我有资格免费续杯吗?完美。

And here's a little cultural tip.

这里还有一个小小的文化贴士。

Usually these VIP free refills only apply to basic drinks like brute drip coffee, hot tea, or iced tea.

通常这些贵宾免费续杯仅适用于基础饮品,比如黑滴滤咖啡、热茶或冰茶。

You can't usually get a free refill on a fancy iced caramel macchiato with extra whipped cream.

你通常无法在加了额外奶油的花式冰焦糖玛奇朵这种花哨饮料上获得免费续杯。

If you ask for a refill on a complex drink like that, the barista will politely tell you that those

如果你要求给那种复杂的饮料续杯,咖啡师会礼貌地告诉你那些

are not eligible.

是不符合资格的。

Ah, that makes sense.

啊,那很有道理。

No free refills on the super fancy drinks.

超级花哨的饮料不能免费续杯。

Good to know.

能了解到这一点真好。

Otherwise, I would have made a fool of myself asking for a free giant frappuccino refill.

否则,我要是要求免费续杯一大杯星冰乐,可就出丑了。

Yes, that might cause some awkwardness.

是的,那可能会导致一些尴尬。

Now, let's look at another scenario.

现在,让我们看看另一种场景。

Imagine you're at a fast food restaurant or a casual dining place where they have a self -service

想象一下,你在一家快餐店或休闲餐厅,那里有自助

soda fountain.

汽水喷泉机。

Do you need to ask anyone for permission to get a refill?

你需要向任何人寻求许可才能续杯吗?

Oh, I actually know this one.

哦,我实际上知道这个。

Usually, if the soda machine is in the lobby where the customer sit, you can just walk up and refill

通常,如果汽水机在顾客坐的大厅里,你只需走过去给你的

your cup yourself.

杯子续杯即可,靠你自己。

But wait, is it always free or should I still ask?

不过等等,它总是免费的,还是我仍应该问一下?

Generally, if the machine is in the lobby, refills are free and unlimited.

一般来说,如果机器在大厅里,续杯是免费且无限制的。

However, it's always polite to double check if you're unsure.

然而,如果不确定的话,再次确认总是很礼貌的。

You can ask the cashier, is the soda machine self -serve and free refills?

你可以问收银员:“汽水机是自助的并且免费续杯吗?”

It's a quick way to be absolutely sure and avoid any awkward looks.

这是绝对确定并避免任何尴尬目光的快速方法。

Got it.

明白了。

Is the soda machine self -serve?

汽水机器是自助的吗?

That's a great phrase.

那真是个很好的表达。

You know, Rachel, all this talk about drinks is making me thirsty.

你知道吗,瑞秋,聊了这么多关于饮料的话题让我感到口渴了。

Let's do a quick role play so I can practice these new phrases in action.

让我们快速做个角色扮演,这样我就可以在实战中练习这些新短语了。

I want to try being the customer and you can be the server.

我想尝试当顾客,你可以当服务员。

I'd love to.

我很乐意。

Let's set the scene.

让我们来设定一下场景。

You are at a cozy, slightly upscale cafe.

你在一家舒适且稍微高档的咖啡馆。

You've just finished a cup of hot black tea.

你刚喝完一杯热红茶。

You are also a VIP member of this cafe.

你也是这家咖啡馆的贵宾会员。

Let's see how you ask for a refill.

让我们看看你如何要求续杯。

Whenever you're ready, Brian.

布莱恩,你什么时候准备好都可以。

Okay, here goes.

好的,要开始了。

Excuse me. Hi.

打扰一下,你好。

I just finished my black tea.

我刚喝完我的红茶。

I'm a loyalty club member here.

我是这里的忠诚会员俱乐部成员。

Am I eligible for a complimentary refill on this? Wow.

这个我有资格免费续杯吗?哇。

Excellent start.

非常优秀的开始。

As your server, I would say, yes, absolutely.

作为你的服务员,我会说,是的,当然可以。

Since you're a gold tier member, brewed teas are indeed complimentary.

由于您是金卡等级会员,现煮茶饮确实是免费的。

Would you like the same tea or would you like to try our herbal blend for the refill?

续杯您想要同样的茶,还是想试试我们的草本调配茶?

Oh, that's a trick question.

哦,这是一个陷阱问题。

Can I change the flavor of my tea for a refill?

续杯时我可以换茶的口味吗?

Good catch.

很棒的发现。

In some places, yes, they will let you switch flavors of brewed tea or drip coffee.

在某些地方,是的,他们会让你更换现煮茶或滴滤咖啡的口味。

In other places, they might say, we can only refill the same beverage.

在其他地方,他们可能会说,我们只能续杯同一种饮料。

If you want to ask if you can switch, you can say, can I switch to a different flavor for the refill

如果你想问是否可以更换,你可以说:续杯时我可以换成不同的口味吗

or does it have to be the same one?

还是必须是相同的?

That's an incredibly useful question.

那是一个极其有用的问题。

Let me say that again.

让我再次说一遍。

Can I switch to a different flavor or does it have to be the same one?

我可以换成不同的口味,还是必须是同一种?

This is so practical because sometimes you want to try something else on your second cup. Exactly.

这太实用了,因为有时第二杯你想尝尝别的。确实如此。

You are getting the hang of this so quickly, Brian.

布莱恩,你这么快就掌握了要领。

I'm really proud of your progress.

我真为你取得的进步感到骄傲。

Now, let's do one more scenario.

现在,让我们再做一个场景演练。

This time, you're at a classic American diner.

这次,你在一家美式经典小餐馆。

You are drinking Copacola and your glass is completely empty.

你正在喝可卡可拉,而你的杯子完全空了。

The waiter is passing by.

服务员正路过经过。

How do you catch their attention and ask?

你如何引起他们的注意力并询问?

Okay, let's try.

好的,让我们尝试一下。

Excuse me, could I get a refill on my Coke when you get a chance?

打扰一下,您方便的时候可以帮我的可乐续杯吗?

Oh, that was beautiful.

哦,太完美了。

I love how you added when you get a chance.

我喜欢你添加了“您方便的时候”。

That is extremely polite and shows respect for the waiter's time.

那非常礼貌,表达了对服务员时间的尊重。

It sounds incredibly natural and polite.

听起来极其自然且有礼貌。

Ten out of ten.

十分满分。

Thank you, Rachel.

感谢你,瑞秋。

Your scaffolding method really works.

你的脚手架教学法真的很有效。

Breaking it down from the simple word refill to polite additions like when you get a chance makes it

将其从简单的词汇“续杯”拆解到像“您方便的时候”这样的礼貌附加语,这使得

so much easier to build confidence.

建立信心变得容易多了。

I'm so glad to hear that, Brian.

听到你这么说我太高兴了,布莱恩。

That is exactly how we learn.

那正是我们学习的方式。

Step by step, building on what we already know.

循序渐进,在已有知识的基础上不断构建。

Before we wrap up today's episode, let's do a quick recap of the key points we learned today so our

在我们结束今天的节目之前,让我们快速回顾一下今天学到的要点,以便我们的

listeners can lock them into their memory.

听众能够牢记于心。

Yes, let's do it.

好的,让我们开始做吧。

Today, we learned, first, never say renew for drinks.

今天我们首先学到,对于饮料切记不要用续订这个词。

Instead, use the word refill as a noun or a verb.

相反,要使用续杯这个词,它可以作名词或动词。

For example, can I get a refill, please? Excellent.

例如,请问能给我续杯吗?太棒了。

Second, we learned the word complimentary, which is a polite way of saying free, and bottomless,

其次,我们学到了 complimentary(免费的)这个词,它是对“免费”的一种礼貌表达,还有 bottomless,

which means unlimited free refills.

意思是无限的免费续杯。

For example, are refills complimentary?

例如,续杯是免费赠送的吗?

Third, we learned how to use our VIP or reward status to get free perks using the phrase eligible for.

第三,我们学到了如何利用 VIP 或会员身份获得免费福利,使用有资格获得这个短语。

For example, am I eligible for a free refill as a rewards member?

例如,作为积分会员,我有资格免费续杯吗?

And finally, we learned the casual phrase, top off, for when you just want a little extra poured

最后,我们学到了随意的短语 top off,用于你只想再多倒一点点

into your half -full cup, and the polite phrase, when you get a chance, to make your request sound

到半满的杯子里;以及礼貌的短语 when you get a chance,让你的请求听起来

smooth and respectful.

顺畅且得体。

This has been such a useful lesson.

这真是非常有用的一课。

I feel fully prepared to go to any cafe or diner now and get my drink on without any awkwardness.

我现在感觉准备非常充分,可以去任何咖啡馆或餐馆喝饮料,没有任何尴尬。

That's what we love to hear.

这正是我们最喜欢听到的。

For our listeners out there, we encourage you to try practicing these phrases.

对于我们的听众们,我们鼓励大家尝试练习这些短语。

The next time you order a drink, imagine yourself asking for a refill.

下一次点饮料时,想象一下自己要求续杯的情景。

Or better yet, write down your own practice sentences in the comments below.
