Thank you, Elizabeth.

It is an absolute pleasure to be here with you and our listeners.

You know, talking about Jilin always brings back a flood of wonderful memories.

When I first moved there in the middle of December, people told me I was crazy because of the

extreme cold.

But within days, I realized that the physical cold of Jilin is completely countered by the warmth of

its people and the sheer beauty of its landscapes.

I fell in love with it, and I cannot wait to share its stories today.

I love that contrast.

Freezing weather, but warm hearts.

Let us start by laying down some ground rules of geography and history.

When people think of Jilin, they might think of endless snow, but there is so much historical depth here.

Can you tell us about the name Jilin itself?

I heard it has a very poetic origin.

It really does, Elizabeth.

The name Jilin actually comes from the Manchu language.

It's a shortened version of the phrase Jilin Ula, which translates to along the river or by the river.

The river they are referring to is the majestic Songhua River, which winds its way through the province.

In the past, this area was a crucial shipbuilding center during the Qing dynasty.

If you visit Jilin City today, which is the only city in China to share its name with its province,

you can still feel that ancient connection to the water.

The river does not freeze completely in the city center even in winter, which actually creates one

of Jilin's most famous natural wonders.

But we'll get to that in a bit.

Ah, along the river.

That explains so much.

And of course, we cannot talk about Jilin's history without mentioning its capital city, Chengchun.

It has a very different vibe, right?

It was a massive industrial hub. Absolutely.

Chengchun is often called the Motor City of China because it's the birthplace of the nation's

automotive industry.

But for cultural explorers, it's also famous as the cradle of Chinese cinema.

Chengchun Film Studio was the first major film studio established after the founding of New China.

Walking through the old studio grounds today is like stepping back into a vintage movie set.

There's this beautiful architectural blend of mid -century industrialism and green tree -lined avenues.

In fact, Chengchun is incredibly green.

It's often called the City of Springs because of its vast forest parks like Jingyutang.

That sounds incredibly picturesque.

It is amazing how a city can balance heavy industry with such natural beauty.

But David, you mentioned a natural wonder earlier caused by the river not freezing.

I assume you were talking about the famous Jilin Rime Ice or Wusong.

Tell us about that.

What does it actually look like?

Oh, Elizabeth, words can barely do it justice, but I will try.

Imagine waking up at dawn, step out into the freezing air, and find that every single weeping willow

along the Songhua River has been covered in delicate white crystals of ice.

It looks like a forest of silver or white coral.

This is rime ice, or wusong in Chinese.

It's not actually snow or frost.

Because the water coming from the Fengmon hydroelectric station upstream is relatively warm, it

creates steam as it flows through Jilin City.

When this warm steam meets the freezing air, which can drop to minus 20 degrees Celsius, it

condenses and freezes instantly on the tree branches.

Oh wow, that's pure science turned into poetry.

So it is literally frozen mist clinging to the trees.

Is it hard to catch?

I mean, does it happen every day?

It is actually quite rare and depends heavily on the weather conditions.

You need the perfect combination of high humidity, low wind, and very low temperatures.

The locals have a saying about appreciating the rhyme.

Look at the fog in the night, look at the frost in the morning, and look at the falling petals at noon.

In the morning, you walk through a silent, glittering dream world.

Then, as the sun rises and warms the air, the ice begins to melt and fall from the branches,

floating down like a gentle shower of crystal petals.

It is an incredibly moving experience.

That sounds like a scene straight out of a fantasy novel.

I can almost hear the soft rustling of the falling ice crystals.

And speaking of winter miracles, there is another ancient tradition in Jilin that happens on frozen

water, but this one is incredibly lively.

I am talking about the winter fishing on Chaghan Lake.

I have seen videos of this, and it looks absolutely wild.

Wild is the perfect word, Elizabeth.

Chaghan Lake winter fishing is a living fossil of ancient nomadic culture, dating back over a

thousand years to the Liao and Jin dynasties.

Every December and January, the lake freezes solid with ice up to a meter thick.

The fishermen gather on the ice, dressed in traditional sheepskin coats and dog fur hats.

Before they even cast a net, they perform an ancient shamanic ritual to worship the lake and the

sky, asking for a safe and prosperous catch.

The sound of drums and horns echoing across the vast frozen lake is enough to give you goosebumps.

Shamanic rituals on a frozen lake.

That must feel so ancient and mysterious.

But how do they actually catch fish through a meter of solid ice?

It is an engineering masterpiece of human labor.

They do not use modern machines.

Instead, they use hand tools to drill hundreds of holes in the ice in a specific pattern.

Then they thread a massive two -kilometer -long net under the ice using long wooden poles.

To pull this giant net back up, they use a massive wooden winch turned by four strong horses.

When the net finally rises from the water, thousands of plump silver fish start jumping onto the

ice, freezing almost instantly in the cold air.

The steam rises from the wet net and the horses, and hundreds of tourists are cheering.

It is an incredible celebration of life in the dead of winter.

That is unbelievable.

Horses turning winches, giant nets under the ice, and a thousand -year -old tradition.

I also heard there is a huge auction for the very first fish caught, right?

The headfish? Yes!

是的!

The headfish, or tau -tau -yu, is believed to bring extreme good luck and prosperity for the coming year.

People bid astronomical amounts of money for it.

Sometimes the headfish can sell for hundreds of thousands of yuan.

It is a spectacular sight.

And after the hard work on the ice, everyone gathers to eat fresh fish soup.

It's cooked right there on the lake in giant pots over the open fires.

The broth is milky white, rich, and incredibly hot.

Tasting that fresh, steaming soup in a minus 25 degree wind is a flavor memory I will never forget.

Oh, my mouth is watering just thinking about it.

The contrast of hot, fresh soup in the freezing cold is the ultimate comfort food experience.

Speaking of food, Jalyn must have some incredible local dishes to keep people warm.

What are some of the absolute must -tries?

Northeastern Chinese cuisine, or Dongbei Tai, is all about hearty, generous, and comforting flavors.

The ultimate crown jewel of Jalyn cuisine is Gu Bao Rou.

This is double -cooked pork.

It consists of thinly sliced pork loin coated in a potato starch batter, deep -fried until it is

incredibly crispy and golden, and then tossed in a sweet and sour glaze made with vinegar, sugar,

ginger, and garlic.

When you bite into a fresh piece of Gu Bao Rou, you get this loud, satisfying crunch, followed by a

burst of sweet and sour flavor, and then the tender pork inside.

It is an absolute masterpiece of textures.

Stop, David.

You are making me so hungry.

Gu Bao Rou is actually famous worldwide, but eating it in its homeland must be a totally different experience.

Is there any other dish that defines Jalyn comfort food? Definitely.

You have to try the local hot pots, particularly the copper kettle hot pot with sauerkraut, or swansai.

This sauerkraut is made by fermenting local Chinese cabbages in big clay jars during autumn.

In winter, they slice it finely and boil it with pork belly, frozen tofu, and potato glass noodles.

The sourness of the cabbage cuts through the richness of the pork belly, creating a broth that is

deeply savory and sour.

It warms your entire body from the inside out.

And because of Jalyn's rich Manchu heritage, you also find unique traditional snacks like bulowlin

candy and various types of sticky rice cakes.

Sauerkraut and pork belly in a copper pot.

That sounds like the perfect winter meal.

It seems Jalyn food is really designed for sharing and bringing people together around a warm table.

Now, let us head south towards the border, because we cannot talk about Jalyn without mentioning one

of the most sacred and beautiful mountains in Asia, Changbai Mountain, or Mount Changbai.

You are a photographer, David, so you must have some incredible stories from there.

Changbai Mountain is a spiritual experience, Elizabeth.

It is a dormant volcano, and its name literally means always white mountain, referring to the white

volcanic stones and the heavy snow that covers its peaks for most of the year.

At the very top of the mountain, sitting in the volcanic crater, is Tianxi, or Heaven Lake.

It is the highest volcanic crater lake in the world, surrounded by 16 jagged peaks.

The water is a deep sapphire blue, and it is incredibly still.

Because the weather up there changes in a matter of seconds, seeing Heaven Lake clearly is

considered a rare blessing.

Did you get to see it clearly when you went?

I was incredibly lucky.

The first time I hiked up, it was covered in dense, mysterious fog.

You couldn't see 10 feet in front of you.

But I decided to wait.

I sat on a rock, shivering in the wind, and suddenly, as if by magic, the wind swept the clouds away.

The sapphire blue water of Heaven Lake refilled itself right below me.

It was breathtaking.

There is also a famous legend about the Tianxi monster, a mythical creature said to live in the deep

waters of the lake, similar to the Loch Ness monster.

Whether you believe in the monster or not, the atmosphere up there is definitely filled with a sense

of ancient magic.

A mystical lake monster.

That adds such a fun layer of mystery to the natural beauty.

Besides the lake, the surrounding ecosystems of Changbai Mountain are also legendary.

Yes, absolutely.

The forests of Changbai Mountain are incredibly rich in biodiversity.

It is famous for the three treasures of northeast China.

Ginseng, martin fir, and deer antlers.

Ginseng from Changbai Mountain is considered some of the finest in the world.

It is a slow -growing herb that absorbs the essence of the mountain soil.

If you visit the local towns near the mountain, like Fusong, which is known as the ginseng capital,

you will see markets filled with thousands of ginseng roots of all shapes and sizes.

The locals use it in teas, soups, and even make ginseng liquor.

It is fascinating to see how the natural environment directly shapes the culture, lifestyle, and

even the health practices of the people.

Now, David, as we look at Jalene today, how are these traditions and natural resources changing?

We often hear about Jalene transforming its cold resources into a hot economy.

That is a very accurate description of what's happening right now, Elizabeth.

For a long time, the heavy winter was seen as a challenge for development.

But Jalene has successfully turned its ice and snow into a massive ecotourism in winter sports industry.

The province lies on the same golden latitude for winter sports as the Alps and the Rocky Mountains.

Today, Jalene has some of the best ski resorts in Asia, like Beirahou and Lake Sanghwa.

They have hosted major international competitions and attract ski enthusiasts from all over the world.

The snow quality is incredible.

It's dry, light, and powdery, what skiers call powder snow.

Powder snow!

That is the dream for any skier or snowboarder.

It is wonderful to see how Jalene has embraced its climate and turned it into a source of pride and celebration. Exactly.

And what I find most beautiful is that despite this modern development, they have preserved the

local culture.

You can still visit traditional Nongjale, which are local countryside family ends.

There you can sleep on a traditional Kong, a heated brick bed, eat home -cooked meals, and experience

the simple, warm, and generous hospitality of the Northeastern people.

They treat you like family the moment you walk through the door.

If you are cold, they will instantly pour you a hot cup of tea and put a huge plate of food in front

of you.

That warmth is the true soul of Jalene.

That sounds incredibly cozy and welcoming.

Sleeping on a heated brick bed after a day of skiing or exploring rhyme forests?

Sign me up.

David, this has been an absolutely mesmerizing journey through Jalene.

You have brought its icy landscapes and warm human stories to life so beautifully today.

It was my absolute pleasure, Elizabeth.

Jalene is a place that stays in your heart forever once you visit, and I hope our listeners get the

chance to experience its magic firsthand one day.
