Welcome back to TalkCast Speaking, everyone.

欢迎大家回到 TalkCast 口语节目。

I'm your host, Emma.

我是你们的主持人,艾玛。

Have you ever had one of those nights where you're dead tired, ready to drift off to sleep, and

你是否曾经历过这样的夜晚:你累得要命,正准备入睡,而

suddenly your upstairs neighbor decides 1 a .m.

突然你楼上的邻居决定在凌晨 1 点

is the absolute perfect time to rearrange heavy wooden furniture or start tap dancing?

是重新摆放沉重木质家具或开始踢踏舞的绝佳时间?

Oh, Emma, please don't get me started.

哦,艾玛,请别让我打开话匣子。

That is literally my life every single night this past week.

这简直就是我过去这周里每天晚上的真实写照。

I feel like I'm losing my mind.

我觉得我快要失去理智了。

Oh, no.

噢,不。

Listeners, today I'm joined by Daniel, a super talented graphic designer who looks like he hasn't

听众们,今天和我一起的是丹尼尔,一位超级有才华的平面设计师,他看起来就像

slept in three full days.

整整三天没睡觉了。

Welcome to the show, Daniel.

欢迎来到节目,丹尼尔。

Thanks, Emma.

谢谢,艾玛。

It's great to be here, even though my eyes are half closed.

很高兴来到这里,即使我的眼睛都快闭上了。

My new upstairs neighbor bought an electric drum set recently, and he seems to think midnight is

我新搬来的楼上邻居最近买了一套电子鼓,他似乎觉得半夜是

prime rock star practice hour. Yikes.

黄金摇滚巨星练习时间。天哪。

Electric drums at midnight?

电子鼓在半夜?

That sounds like a total nightmare.

听起来简直是一场噩梦。

Dealing with neighbor noise is one of the trickiest situations to navigate in daily life, especially

处理邻居噪音是日常生活中最难应对的情况之一,特别是

when you have to do it in a second language.

当不得不用第二语言去处理的时候。

But don't worry.

但别担心。

Today, we're going to give you the exact vocabulary, polite sentence structures, and cultural tips

今天,我们将为您提供确切的词汇、礼貌的句型和文化小贴士

you need to speak up about noise without starting a neighborhood war.

你需要勇敢说出噪音问题,而又不会引发一场邻里大战。

I desperately need this lesson today, Emma.

艾玛,我今天迫切地需要这堂课。

Honestly, I didn't even know what to say to him last night.

说实话,昨晚我甚至不知道该对他说什么。

I was so exhausted and annoyed, I just marched upstairs, knocked on his door, and shouted, Hey, you

我当时又筋疲力尽又烦,直接气冲冲地走到楼上,敲响他的门,大喊:嘿,你

make big noise. Stop.

制造很大的噪音。停下。

Oh, Daniel, I love your honesty.

哦,丹尼尔,我喜欢你的诚实。

But shouting, you make big noise can sound a little aggressive, and it's actually not quite natural

但是大喊“你制造了很大的噪音”听起来有点具有攻击性,而且在英语中其实不太自然

in English.

在英语中。

Let me scaffold this for you step by step.

让我一步一步地为你搭建脚手架。

Let's build up your basic vocabulary first so you have much better choices.

我们先建立你的基础词汇,这样你会有更好的选择。

Please save me.

请救救我吧。

What is a more natural English word for a terrible loud noise?

有没有哪个更地道的英语单词来形容可怕的巨大噪音?

A fantastic native word for loud, unpleasant noise is racket.

一个用来形容大声、令人不快的噪音的极好地道词是喧闹声。

That's spelled R -A -C -K -E -T.

拼写是 R-A-C-K-E-T。

You can say, what's that racket?

你可以说:“那是什么喧闹声?”

Or, they are making a huge racket upstairs.

或者,“他们楼上在制造巨大的噪音。”

Ah, racket.

啊,喧闹声。

That's a fun word.

真是个有趣的词。

So I could say, sorry to bother you, but that's a huge racket?

所以我可以这么说:“抱歉打扰了,但那是什么巨大的噪音吗?”

You're getting close.

你很接近了。

But even better than calling it a racket directly to their face, you can ask them to use the phrase,

但比起直接当面管它叫 racket,你可以要求他们使用这个短语:

keep the noise down.

保持安静。

The word down here means lowering the volume.

这里的 down 意思是调低音量。

So you can politely ask, could you please keep the noise down?

所以你可以礼貌地问:“请你们把声音调小一点好吗?”

Oh, I see.

哦,我明白了。

Keep the noise down.

把噪音调小。

That sounds way softer and more natural than stop making noise. Exactly.

这听起来比“别制造噪音”要温和得多,也自然得多。完全正确。

And if you want to explain how the noise affects you, you can say, it's keeping me awake or it's

如果你想解释噪音是如何影响你的,你可以说:“它让我睡不着”或者它是……

disturbing my sleep.

打扰我的睡眠。

Pay attention to the verb disturb.

请注意动词disturb。

D -I -S -T -U -R -B.

D-I-S-T-U-R-B。

It's extremely useful when talking about peace and quiet. Right.

当谈论平静和安宁时,它极其有用。对吧。

Disturb my sleep.

打扰我的睡眠。

Last night, that drumming definitely disturbed my sleep.

昨晚,那阵鼓声绝对打扰了我的睡眠。

It was getting completely out of control.

这变得完全失控了。

Ooh, nice expression.

哦,不错的表达。

Out of control.

失控。

Or another great idiom, getting out of hand.

或者另一个很好的习语,失控。

When a situation gets out of hand, it means it's becoming unmanageable.

当情况失控时,意味着它变得无法管理。

Like when neighbor noise starts happening every single night.

就像邻居的噪音开始每晚都发生一样。

So Emma, if I knock on my neighbor's door tonight, how should I actually open the conversation?

所以艾玛,如果我今晚敲邻居的门,我究竟该如何开启对话呢?

In Chinese, we often start with, Sorry to bother you, but how do native English speakers soften

在中文里,我们通常以“打扰了”开头,但母语英语使用者是如何软化的

their request?

他们的请求的?

That's a great point, Daniel.

这是一个很好的观点,丹尼尔。

In English -speaking cultures, direct requests can sound demanding if you don't use softners or

在英语文化中,如果你不使用缓和语,直接请求听起来会很苛求

indirect phrasing.

间接措辞。

Instead of saying, you are too loud, we rely heavily on modal verbs and polite introductory phrases.

与其说你太吵了,我们严重依赖情态动词和礼貌的引导短语。

Like, can you or could you?

比如,你能还是可以?

Yes, but let's take it a step further.

是的,但让我们更进一步。

Try starting with, I was wondering if you could.

尝试以“我想知道你是否可以”开头。

For example, I was wondering if you could keep the noise down a bit.

例如,我想知道你是否能把噪音降低一点。

I was wondering if you could.

我想知道你是否可以。

Wow, that sounds super polite and smooth.

哇,听起来超级礼貌和流畅。

It really is.

它确实是。

Another extremely versatile sentence template is, Would you mind?

另一个极其通用的句型模板是:“你介意……吗?”

Followed by a verb with ing.

后面跟一个带ing的动词。

For example, Would you mind turning down the music?

例如,你介意把音乐关小一点吗?

Let me try that.

让我尝试一下。

Would you mind keeping it down a little?

你介意保持小声一点吗?

Spot on.

准确。

Perfect grammar.

完美的语法。

Now, here is a classic trap that confuses so many English learners.

现在,这里有一个经典陷阱,困扰着许多英语学习者。

If you ask someone, would you mind turning down the music, what does it mean if they reply, no, not

如果你问某人“你介意把音乐关小一点吗”,如果他们回答“不,一点也不”

at all?

丝毫不?

Wait, if they say no, doesn't that mean they refuse to do it?

等等,如果他们说“不”,那难道不意味着他们拒绝这样做吗?

I am so glad you asked.

我很高兴你问了。

This is a classic confusion.

这是一个经典的混淆。

Do you mind literally means, does it bother you?

你介意字面意思是这会困扰你吗?

So, if they answer no, not at all, or no problem, it actually means, no, it doesn't bother me to do

所以,如果他们回答“不,一点也不”或“没问题”,它实际意味着“不,这样做并不困扰我”

that, I will gladly lower the volume. What?

我将乐意调低音量。什么?

No way.

没门。

So, no actually means, yes, I will stop the noise? Precisely.

所以“不”实际上意味着“是的,我会停止制造噪音”?准确地说。

No means, I don't mind helping you.

“不”意味着我不介意帮助你。

So, if your neighbor smiles and says, oh, no problem at all, don't worry.

所以,如果你的邻居笑着说“哦,一点问题也没有,别担心”。

That means total success.

这意味着完全成功。

That is so good to know.

很高兴知道这一点。

I would have thought they were saying, no, I won't stop, and gotten angry all over again.

我本会以为他们在说“不,我不会停下来”,然后又一次生气了。

Now, let's move on to some higher level expressions and cultural tips.

现在,让我们继续学习一些更高阶的表达和文化小贴士。

What if you've asked them nicely, but they keep playing music at 2 a .m.

如果你已经客气地请求过他们,但他们还是在凌晨两点放音乐呢?

every weekend?

每个周末?

Then I am going to lose my temper completely.

那我可就要彻底发脾气了。

And a wonderful idiom for being completely frustrated by a repeating problem is at my wit's end.

而且,有一个极好的习语用来形容被一个重复出现的问题搞得彻底沮丧,那就是 "at my wit's end"。

That's W -I -T -S.

也就是 W-I-T-S。

You can say, I'm at my wit's end with this noise.

你可以说,我对这种噪音真是束手无策了。

I'm at my wit's end.

我真是智穷才尽了。

I feel that in my soul right now.

我现在在灵魂深处感同身受。

By the way, Emma, is there a specific nickname for people who stay up super late making noise?

顺便问一下,艾玛,对于那些熬夜很晚制造噪音的人,有没有一个特定的称呼?

Someone who stays up very late is called a night owl.

那些睡得很晚的人被称为夜猫子。

Your neighbor sounds like a classic night owl.

你的邻居听起来像是个典型的夜猫子。

Definitely a night owl.

绝对是夜猫子。

Now, culturally, in places like the U .S.

那么,从文化上来说,在美国这样的地方...

or Western countries, is it normal to knock directly on a neighbor's door late at night?

或者是西方国家,大半夜直接去敲邻居的门正常吗?

That's an important cultural question.

这是一个重要的文化问题。

If it's early evening, a friendly face -to -face chat is great.

如果是傍晚,来一次友好的面对面交谈是很棒的。

But late at night, or if you feel uncomfortable with direct confrontation, leaving a polite note on

但如果是深夜,或者如果你对直接对抗感到不舒服,留下一张礼貌的便条...

their door or sticky note is very common and accepted.

贴在他们的门上或留个便签是非常普遍且被接受的。

A sticky note?

一张黏性便签?

What would a polite sticky note say?

一张礼貌的便签会写些什么呢?

You could write something like, Hi, neighbor.

你可以写类似这样的话:嗨,邻居。

Just a quick note.

仅作个简短的留言。

The sound carries a lot through the floor at night.

晚上声音通过地板传播得厉害。

Would you mind keeping it down after 10 p .m.?

晚上10点以后,你介意小声一点吗?

I have early work mornings.

我早上要早起上班。

Thanks, apartment 4B.

谢谢,4B公寓。

Oh, saying the sound carries blames the building's structure instead of accusing the person directly.

哦,说声音传播得远,是在责怪建筑结构,而不是直接指责这个人。

That is brilliant strategy. Bingo!

这真是个绝妙的策略。太对了!

It removes personal blame.

这消除了个人指责。

And if that still doesn't work, most apartments have designated quiet hours, usually 10 p .m.

如果这还是不管用,大多数公寓都有指定的安静时间,通常是晚上10点。

to 7 a .m.

到上午7点。

At that point, you can contact your building manager or landlord.

到那个时候,你可以联系你的物业经理或房东。

All right, Daniel, let's do a quick roleplay to test everything you've learned.

好的,丹尼尔,我们来做一个快速的角色扮演来测试你学到的一切。

Imagine I'm your noisy neighbor playing loud music, and you knock on my apartment door.

想象一下我是你那个放着响亮音乐的吵闹邻居,而你来敲我的公寓门。

Give it your best shot.

尽力一试吧。

Okay, let's do this.

好的,我们干吧。

Knock, knock, knock.

敲、敲、敲。

Opens door.

开门。

Oh, hi there.

哦,嗨。

Can I help you with something? Hi.

有什么事情需要我帮忙吗?嗨。

Sorry to bother you, but you are making a racket with your drums.

抱歉打扰了,但你敲鼓弄出的喧闹声太大了。

You must stop right now because I have an early meeting tomorrow.

你现在必须停下来,因为我明天有个早会。

Okay, time out.

好的,暂停。

Let's pause right there.

我们就在那儿暂停一下。

Listeners, did you hear that?

听众们,你们听到那个了吗?

Let's use our three -step error correction method here.

我们在这里使用我们的三步错误纠正方法。

Uh -oh.

哎呀。

Did I mess up again?

我是不是又搞砸了?

Don't worry.

别担心。

You used the new word racket, which is awesome.

你用了新单词racket,这真是太棒了。

But saying you must stop right now sounds like an official police order.

但说你必须马上停下来听起来就像是一个官方的警察命令。

It might make your neighbor very defensive.

这可能会让你的邻居产生很强的戒备心理。

Ah, I see.

啊,我明白了。

How should I fix that to make it sound better?

我该如何修改才能让它听起来更好呢?

Step one, the mistake was, you are making a racket.

第一步,错误在于,你在制造噪音。

You must stop now.

你现在必须停止。

Step two, a much better native response would be, hi, sorry to bother you so late, but the sound

第二步,一个好得多的地道回应应该是,嗨,很抱歉这么晚打扰你,但是声音

carries quite a bit.

传播得相当远。

Would you mind keeping you down or calling it a night?

你介意小点声或者就此收工吗?

Ooh, calling it a night.

噢,就此结束今晚的活动。

What does that mean?

那是什么意思?

Step three, explanation time.

第三步,解释时间。

To call it a night is a great idiom, meaning to stop an activity and go to bed.

收工是一个很好的习语,意思是停止活动去睡觉。

By using softeners like quite a bit and would you mind, you get your point across without sounding aggressive.

通过使用诸如 quite a bit 和 would you mind 这样的缓和语,你可以在听起来不那么具有攻击性的情况下表达你的观点。

Got it.

懂了。

Let me try the role play one more time.

让我再试一次角色扮演。

Knock, knock.

敲敲。

Hi there.

嗨,你好。

Can I help you? Hi.

我能帮你吗?嗨。

Really sorry to bother you this late, but I was wondering if you could keep the noise down a bit.

非常抱歉这么晚打扰你,但我在想你能不能把噪音稍微调小一点。

The sound carries through the walls and I'm at my wits end because I have an early start tomorrow morning.

声音穿透了墙壁,我简直束手无策,因为我明天一早还要早起。

Oh, wow.

哦,哇。

Daniel, that was absolutely perfect.

丹尼尔,那绝对完美。

If I were your neighbor, I would immediately apologize and put on headphones. Yes.

如果我是你的邻居,我会立刻道歉并戴上耳机。是的。

That felt so much more natural and confident.

感觉自然和自信多了。

You did a fantastic job.

你做得棒极了。

Before we wrap up today's episode, let's quickly recap our top core points for our listeners.

在我们结束今天的节目之前,让我们为听众快速回顾一下核心要点。

First, use polite softeners like, I was wondering if you could, and would you mind keeping it down?

首先,使用像“I was wondering if you could”和“would you mind keeping it down”这样的礼貌缓和语。

Second, remember key terms like, racket, keep the noise down, and the phrase, at my wits end when

其次,记住关键术语,比如racket、keep the noise down,以及短语

you're super frustrated.

当你超级沮丧时。

Third, use neutral phrases like, the sound carries to avoid direct personal conflict.

第三,使用诸如“the sound carries”之类的中立短语,以避免直接的个人冲突。

And remember that when someone answers, no, not at all, to, would you mind, it means they are happy

请记住,当有人对“would you mind”回答“不,一点也不”时,这意味着他们很高兴

to help.

来帮忙。

I'm going home tonight feeling 100 % prepared.

我今晚回家感觉100%准备好了。

No more shouting, you make big noise for me.

不再争吵,你给我制造了巨大的噪音。

That's what I love to hear.
